XU came-from-behind to beat Seton Hall and clinch a fifth straight BIG EAST Championships appearance on Saturday
NEW YORK - Samuel Buzzas was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week and Matt Vasquenza joined him on the league's honor roll after playing big roles in XU men's soccer's 3-2 win over Seton Hall on Saturday, a victory which clinched a playoff spot for the Musketeers.
Buzzas was honored by the league for the first time in his career after scoring a massive goal in the 89th minute (with 1:56 left on the clock) to equalize for XU. The goal was his second of the season from his center back position and put XU in position to force overtime.
Vasquenza took the baton from there, scoring the golden goal in 94th minute of overtime on his Senior Night as Xavier survived a late charge by Seton Hall. The senior forward led his team with six shots, including three on goal in the match.
The East Hampton, Conn. native leads XU with 17 points on the year. His goal gave him seven for the season, tying him for XU's team lead and was also the 24th of his career, moving him into a tie for ninth in XU's all-time record book.
Xavier returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Butler to cap the regular season at 7 p.m. on the BEDN. The Bulldogs have already clinched the BIG EAST regular season title, but XU will be playing for seeding and can still finish anywhere from second to fourth in the league standings.
