Men's Soccer Falls at Butler to Cap Regular Season

Playoff picture comes clear, Musketeers will face Providence in upcoming BIG EAST Championships
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Simen Hestes put Xavier men's soccer on top early on a cold and wet night at Butler's Sellick Bowl on Wednesday night, but the Bulldogs scored two unanswered to win 2-1 to close the regular season.
Xavier dropped to 10-5-2 and 5-4 in the BIG EAST, officially sealing the fourth seed for the upcoming BIG EAST Championships. The Musketeers have never missed the league tournament and have never finished lower than fifth since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.
Butler, already the 2017 BIG EAST regular season champion, improved to 12-4-1 and 8-1 in league play and will have a bye for the first round of the league tournament.

• Xavier drops to 3-4-2 on the road this season as a three-match win streak came to a halt.
• Simen Hestnes' goal was his sixth of the year and second in as many matches. He is now tied with Matt Vasquenza for the team lead with 18 points.
• Matt Vasquenza assisted on Hestnes' score, which was his fourth of the season and gave him 18 points for the season. He's now just two points shy of his career-best mark of 20 points as a freshman in 2014.
• The point gave Vasquenza 65 in his career, moving him into sole possession of ninth all-time at XU with Charlie Combs (1991-94).
• Cam Taylor picked up his fourth assist on the Hestnes goal, giving him 16 points this fall to rank second for XU.
• Junior Colin Hanley made his fourth straight start, dropping his first match to fall to 3-1 in net this season.
• The Musketeers are now 26-15-4 (.622) in league play since joining the BIG EAST for the 2013 season.
• Xavier held a 13-6 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal, but the Bulldogs got a great performance from Eric Dick who made five saves in net.
• XU also had a 7-2 lead in corner kicks and didn't allow a corner to Butler until the 77th minute.

29' | Tied 1-1 | Isaac Galliford found a ball in the middle of box and finished with his right foot after two deflections on cross attempts by the Bulldogs.
78' | Butler 2-1 | Eric Leonard came flying up on the back post to finish a header attempt off a corner kick, giving Butler the go-ahead score on an assist by Isaac Galliford.
