Doss and Alfano earn first team honors, Tierney named to second team
CINCINNATI - Three Xavier women's soccer players were honored by the Ohio Collegiate Soccer Association (OCSA) this week for their work on the field and in the classroom, earning Academic All-Ohio honors for 2017. Tori Doss and Carly Alfano, who both earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, were named to the first team while Maddie Tierney earned second team honors.
Doss posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 in her undergraduate studies and graduated last May with a double major in Biology and Chemistry. She deferred her enrollment in medical school at Ohio State to play a fifth year at Xavier. In that year, Doss helped lead the Musketeers to the program's first conference tournament appearance since 2003 and earned BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team honors.
Doss led the 2017 squad on offense during conference play, tallying a team-high seven points, matching Sydney Schembri for team-high in conference play with three goals, and picking up an assist.
Doss finished the season with 10 points on four goals and a pair of assists.
Alfano has posted a perfect grade point average of 4.00 while studying Biology, with double minors in Chemistry and Deaf Studies. The native of Belle River, Ontario, Canada, intends to pursue medical school after graduation.
On the field, Alfano led the 2017 Musketeers in minutes played with over 1,800 for the season, anchoring the Xavier defense as middle back.
Alfano's efforts earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Third Team and All-Ohio First Team for 2017.
Tierney graduated last May with a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a Natural Science Minor, posting a 3.924 grade point average through her undergraduate work. During the 2017 season, Tierney did graduate work in preparation for applying to medical school.
Tierney started all 20 games for the Musketeers, clocking over 1,700 minutes between the Xavier defense and midfield. She recorded 12 shots, including five on goals and handled the bulk of the Musketeers' free kick opportunities.
Tierney was a key component in the Xavier backline which held all-nine BIG EAST opponents to one goal or fewer during the conference regular season, helping earn the program's first BIG EAST Championship bid since joining the conference and the first post-season appearances since 2003. All told, Xavier's defense forced four shutouts on the season.
