Cory Brown Invited to MLS Combine

Senior defender will be fifth Musketeer at showcase in last six years
LOS ANGELES – Xavier men's soccer senior defender Cory Brown was announced as a 2018 MLS Combine participant on Friday afternoon, marking the fifth time in six years a Musketeer has been selected for the event.
An important audition for some of the best amateur players in the nation, MLS will hold its annual combine from Jan. 11-17 at Orlando City Stadium, with representatives from 22 MLS clubs in addition to expansion franchise LAFC scouting the top college prospects ahead of the Jan. 19 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia.
The event will feature physical testing, interviews and full-field matches on Saturday, Jan. 13, Monday, Jan. 15 and Wednesday, Jan. 17. All combine matches will be played at Orlando City Stadium.
Brown, a native of Nelson, New Zealand, is the latest in a list of nationally-recognized defensive players and will graduate as one of the most decorated Musketeers in program history.
Named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List ahead of the season, Brown capped one of the most best careers in XU history in 2017 with a third straight First Team All-BIG EAST selection and a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Second Team.
A native of Nelson, New Zealand, Brown started all 20 matches and led the team in minutes this fall, playing a part in six shutouts and adding a goal and three assists from the backline.
For his career, Brown played a part in 31 career shutouts and was an named all-conference player in all four of his years on campus.
During the 2014 season, Brown was instrumental in XU's run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. He also helped XU reach two BIG EAST Championship matches in the last four years.
Xavier is one of less than 15 schools send a player to five of the last six MLS Combines. The last XU participant in the MLS Combine was Jalen Brown in 2017, who parlayed a strong performance into a second round (38th overall) selection in the MLS SuperDraft by New York City FC.
Prior to Jalen Brown's showing, 2014 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Eric Osswald had a brilliant showcase in January of 2015 and spent time with the USL's Real Monarchs upon graduation.
All four XU grads to have participated at the combine have gone on to sign professional contracts, including MLS Draft selections Luke Spencer ('13), Nick Hagglund ('14) and Jalen Brown ('17).
Overall, three Xavier men's soccer players have been drafted in the last six years.
