Schilling broke the XU record for saves as a sophomore and fired seven innings of one-run ball in his first career start on Saturday

TROY, Ala. - Garrett Schilling went a career-high seven innings in a dominant first career start, but Xavier baseball fell 2-1 in 10 innings at Troy on Saturday afternoon.

Schilling allowed a run in the first, but cruised afterwards. The junior righty only needed 72 pitches to get through seven, striking out five and allowing just three hits.

Conor Grammes continued his hot start with the bat, as the freshman provided XU's lone run with a two-out RBI double in the sixth.

The score stayed locked at 1-1 until the bottom of the 10th when Troy scored the winning run in walk-off fashion on a fielder's choice play.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Conor Grammes went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and now has back-to-back multi-hit games with an RBI to begin his XU career.
• Mitch Gallagher (1-for-3) connected for a leadoff double in the fifth, the first hit of his Xavier career.
• Joe Gellenbeck walked twice and scored XU's lone run in the sixth inning, coming around from second after his first steal of the season.
• Xavier was held to just three hits and struggled with the strikeout for a second straight game, as Troy pitchers rang up 15. The Musketeers have struck out 31 times in two games.
• Matt Fallon went 0-for-3, seeing a nine-game hitting streak dating back to 2016 come to an end.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Garrett Schilling was sterling in his first career start, going seven innings and allowing just three hits to go with five strikeouts.
• Schilling was making his first career start after setting XU's school record with 14 saves as a sophomore in 2016.
• Senior Brad Kirschner tossed 2.1 innings in relief, taking the hard luck loss on an unearned run in the 10th.
• XU starting pitchers have combined for a 2.25 ERA through two games, striking out 13 and allowing just four hits in 12 innings of work.
• Xavier's bullpen has also thrown 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run to start the season.

HOW XU SCORED

SIXTH INNING: Joe Gellenbeck drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a stolen base before Conor Grammes doubled down the left field line to make it a 1-1 game.
