Bannon hit .500, Jacknewitz struck out 13 during XU's series split against Penn State
NEW YORK - Senior Greg Jacknewitz and junior Rylan Bannon were both recognized by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday, earning spots on the league's honor roll for their weekend performances.
Bannon started all four games at third base in a series split against Penn State, hitting .500 (8-for-16) for the weekend and leading the team with eight hits, three doubles, two homers, eight RBI and 19 total bases. The Joliet, Ill. native also walked three times to post a .579 on-base percentage, while slugging 1.188.
In a 7-5 loss on Friday, Bannon went 2-for-5 with his first homer of the year. On Saturday, he caught fire as XU took both games of a doubleheader against the Nittany Lions. For the pair, Bannon went 6-for-8 (.750) with four runs scored and six RBI. He reached base four times in a 10-4 win, going 2-for-3 with a triple, homer and pair of walks. In the nightcap, he collected a career-high four hits and went 4-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI and a double.
Jacknewitz turned in the best start of his Xavier career in the Sunday series finale, striking out a career-high 13 and tying a career-high with seven innings of scoreless ball.
The Delaware, Ohio native was first XU pitcher to reach double digits in strikeouts since Trent Astle had 10 K's on March 22, 2015 at Lipscomb and left with a 1-0 lead after the seventh inning, but took a tough no-decision as Penn State rallied for six in the eighth to win by a 6-1 final score.
Xavier returns to the diamond on Friday, March 3 for the first of a three game series at Charlotte. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
