Gellenbeck's Grand Slam Not Enough as Baseball Falls Victim to Late Wright State Rally, 8-7

Musketeer slugger bashed his second career grand slam on Tuesday night
FAIRBORN, Ohio – Joe Gellenbeck crushed a go-ahead fourth inning grand slam, but Wright State battled back late to take a comeback win, 8-7, on Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
With the result, the Musketeers drop to 18-15 and split the season series with Wright State. The Raiders go to 22-8 overall.
• Joe Gellenbeck went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a walk and five RBI. He also hit his second career grand slam in the fourth, which was his eighth homer of the season.
• Blaine Griffiths went 1-for-2 with a run scored and a career-high three walks at the DH spot. Griffiths now has five walks in his past two games.
• Will LaRue was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. The junior left fielder is now hitting .362 (21-for-58) with a homer and seven RBI in his last 17 games. He now has a team-high five game hitting streak in addition to a 12-game streak of reaching base.
• LaRue also swiped two bases, giving him a team and league-leading 16 steals this season.
• Chris Givin (1-for-4, R, RBI), Rylan Bannon (1-for-5), Nate Soria (1-for-5) and Matt Fallon (1-for-4) also contributed hits.
• The Musketeers worked six walks and have had a base on balls in all 33 games this season.
• Senior Trent Astle got the start and went three innings, allowing four hits and three earned runs while striking out two.
• XU's middle relief was stellar, limiting Wright State to just two hits over the next four innings.
• Freshman David Williams struck out the side in his only inning of work, working around a single.
• Senior Brad Kirschner retired six of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless innings, striking out one.
• Sophomore Matt Kent posted a scoreless seventh, fanning one to lower his season ERA to 1.74.
• Taylor Williams ran into trouble in the eighth, surrendering three hits and allowing three earned runs as WSU roared back with a five-run inning.
• Trey Schramm entered in relief, allowing one more hit and run before getting out of the jam.
FIRST INNING: Joe Gellenbeck and Rylan Bannon connected for back-to-back one out singles, advancing a base on a ground out by Conor Grammes. With two outs, Nate Soria singled to left to bring Gellenbeck home and give XU at 1-0 lead.
FOURTH INNING: Blaine Griffiths walked and Ethan Schmidt was plunked to begin the frame. Will LaRue then loaded the bases with a single to left. After two straight outs nearly got WSU out of the jam, Joe Gellenbeck blasted a grand slam to right to give XU a 5-3 lead.
SIXTH INNING: Will LaRue singled to lead off the inning, swiping second and third base before coming home on a single by Chris Givin.
EIGHTH INNING: Chris Givin walked to open up the inning, stealing second and scoring on an RBI single up the middle by Joe Gellenbeck.
• XU returns to BIG EAST play this weekend, beginning with an 8 p.m. first pitch against Seton Hall at Prasco Park on Thursday. That game will be televised on FS1.
• Games two and three of the Seton Hall series will be played at Hayden Field on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
