Baseball Breaks Out Bats, Takes Series Finale at Villanova 10-1

Grammes, Gellenbeck homer to back another strong pitching day as XU avoids road sweep at Villanova
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – Joe Gellenbeck and Conor Grammes left the yard on Sunday as Xavier baseball got the bats going in a 10-1 win over Villanova at Villanova Ballpark.
The Musketeers improved to 10-5 in their last 15, going to 18-14 overall and 1-2 in the BIG EAST.
XU also avoided a series sweep with the win, exploding for 10 runs after scoring just two in the first two games of the weekend.
The Wildcats dropped to 6-17 (2-1 BIG EAST).
• Conor Grammes went 2-for-3 with his fourth homer of the year and a season-high four runs scored. The freshman is hitting .509 (27-for-53) with three homers and 11 RBI in his last 15 games and leads XU with 15 multi-hit games.
• Matt Fallon paced the offense with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, providing a double and three RBI. Fallon caps the weekend 5-for-11 (.455) with three RBI.
• Joe Gellenbeck went 1-for-5 with his seventh homer of the season, a solo blast in the ninth.
• Rylan Bannon went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
• Blaine Griffiths went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks at the DH spot.
• Will LaRue was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and RBI. The junior left fielder is now hitting .340 (18-for-53) with a homer and seven RBI in his last 16 games.
• LaRue also swiped his team and league-leading 14th base of the season.
• Greg Jacknewitz got the start and went 4.1 innings, allowing just one earned run and three hits while striking out four.
• Matt Kent (4-1) turned in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out two to pick up the win.
• David Williams, Trey Schramm and Taylor Williams then combined for three innings of hitless relief to nail down the win.
• XU's bullpen was lights-out on Sunday, providing 4.2 innings of hitless, scoreless relief. Musketeer relievers walked just two and struck out seven to slam the door.
• For the weekend, Xavier pitchers posted a combined 1.75 ERA, logging 25.2 innings and striking out 33 while allowing just eight hits. The Musketeers held Villanova to a team batting average of .095 over the three-game series.
• Xavier returns to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., traveling to Wright State for a midweek non-conference matchup.
• XU returns to BIG EAST play next weekend, beginning with an 8 p.m. first pitch against Seton Hall at Prasco Park on Thursday. That game will be televised on FS1.
• Games two and three of the Seton Hall series will be played at Hayden Field on Friday and Saturday afternoon.
