Spring Recap: Women's Golf
05.17.17 | Women's Golf
CINCINNATI – The Xavier women's golf team wrapped up their spring season at the BIG EAST Championship in late April. Here's a look at some of the season highlights.
The Musketeers finished in fifth place out of 13 teams at the UTRGV Invitational in McAllen, Texas, compiling a three-day score of 936 (+84).
The Musketeers saved the best for last, shooting a season low round as a team in the third round of the BIG EAST Championship [301. +13].
Coach Patz on the team's performance:
"Throughout the spring season the players could feel their games coming around. We were able to show this at times with solid team scores - 299 at Rio Verde, 305 at UTRGV, 304 at The Babs Steffens, and 301 at BIG EAST - and individual rounds around par. We struggled to put these good performances together for an entire tournament, but it was exciting to see it all come together the last round of BIG EAST to help us move up in that event."
Rachel Johnson had the best individual finish of the season, finishing tied for sixth at the UTRGV Invitational. The senior shot a 227 (+14) over three rounds.
Mikayla Fitzpatrick had the low round of the season, firing a 69 (-2) in the second round of the Yale Fall Intercollegiate.
Coach Patz on individual play:
"Mikayla Fitzpatrick was able to capture her first top 10 finish in her home state, and then, tied Mikayla Smith with a 10th place finish at the BIG EAST. Grace was able to lead the way for us at Texas State and contributed some low final round scores throughout the spring. We were all happy to see Rachel end her collegiate career with a birdie on her final hole at the BIG EAST to tie her career low. We wish Rachel the best of luck as she graduates and returns to Nashville where she will work with Hospital Corporation of America."
The Musketeers finished fourth in the conference, three strokes ahead of defending champion Seton Hall.
Mikayla Smith and Mikayla Fitzpatrick both finished tied for 10th individually.
The Xavier women's golf team took home back-to-back BIG EAST Women's Golfer of the Week awards in early March.
Mikayla Fitzpatrick - t-8th at the Rio Verde Invitational
Rachel Johnson - t-6th at the UTRGV Invitational
Mikayla Fitzpatrick earned the first ever BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Award for Xavier women's golf, thanks to a historic year on the course.
For the season, Fitzpatrick ranked seventh in the BIG EAST and led XU with a 76.48 stroke average in 29 rounds spanning 10 tournaments. That mark broke Shane Crutchfield's 2013 stroke average record for a Musketeer freshman (77). Fitzpatrick posted five top-25 finishes overall, including a season-best tie for eighth at the Rio Verde Invitational – where she shot a 5-over 221 over three rounds.
Coach Patz on Fitzpatrick's freshman season:
"Mikayla Fitzpatrick was steady for us all year. It was great to see her efforts rewarded with a major conference award."
Head coach Breanna Patz is adding four incoming freshman in the fall. Morgan Tinsley (Louisville, Ky.), Andie Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.), Ke'Asha Phillips (Owensboro, Ky.), and Amy Kucera (Riverside, Ill.) are the newest members of Xavier women's golf.
