Milek serves as Xavier’s Director of Public Safety/Police Chief
CINCINNATI – Xavier University Director of Athletics Greg Christopher presented Xavier University Director of Public Safety/Police Chief Joe Milek with the department's Teammate of the Year Award on Thursday afternoon. The award honors Xavier employees outside of Athletics who go above and beyond to assist the athletic department.
Christopher presented Milek with the award at the athletic department's end-of-year staff cookout ahead of the Xavier baseball game against Georgetown. Milek also threw out the first pitch of the baseball game.
"Joe is the perfect choice for our Teammate of the Year Award," said Christopher. "In two years (as chief of police) at Xavier Joe has had a positive influence on Xavier Athletics, including our games and events. Even more importantly, Joe has developed strong relationships with everyone, including our student-athletes, staff and fans. The time he invests – both operationally and via personal investment in our people – is remarkable. Xavier is a better place because of Joe's leadership."
"I really appreciate being recognized for my contributions to the Xavier Athletic Department, but I want everyone to know that I am accepting this award on behalf of the entire Xavier University Police Department," said Milek. "This is just another fine example of my team making me shine and I have to give them the credit they deserve. "
Milek started his law enforcement career with the United States Air Force Security Police in 1982 until 1992, joined the Cincinnati Police Department in 1993 and work there until 2015 when he took over as Chief of Police at Xavier University.
"Sports have played a big role in my life in so many different ways and working with the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati Bengals and countless events at US Bank Arena over the years really helped give me an appreciation for what special event management is all about," said Milek. "It's important to plan for the worst and hope for the best, but we can never forget that we do all of this for the sport and the fans."
