Gellenbeck hit .467 with a pair of homers, Lowther struck out seven in six perfect frames
CINCINNATI - Joe Gellenbeck and Zac Lowther were named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after leading Xavier baseball to a 4-0 week and a berth in this week's BIG EAST Championships in Omaha, Neb.
The Musketeers earned a win over crosstown rival Cincinnati and a weekend sweep over Georgetown, scoring an incredible 43 runs over four games to finish the regular season 29-25 (10-6 BIG EAST).
Gellenbeck earns the honor after putting together one of the best weeks of his season, hitting .467 (7-for-15), scoring five times, homering twice and driving in six runs. The senior right fielder continues to lead XU and the BIG EAST with 52 RBI on the season. He also walked twice and stole a base last week, making him a perfect 11-for-11 in steals this season.
The St. Xavier graduate had at least one hit and drove in at least one run in all four games, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a long homer to right in a 7-1 win over UC on Tuesday. He also hit his 10th homer of the season in Friday's win over Georgetown, helping XU clinch the three-seed in the BIG EAST Tournament in a 13-1 win over Georgetown. Additionally, Gellenbeck had a big two-run single in the fourth to open up the game in Saturday's 6-2 win over Georgetown.
Lowther continued his dominant run through the conference, helping XU officially clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament in Thursday's 17-2 win over Georgetown. The lefty fired six scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk against the Hoyas, striking out seven and leaving with a gigantic lead after throwing 85 pitches.
He finished the game just one strikeout short of the XU record for a single season (106). In league play, he's posted a 2.25 ERA and struck out 49 in 32 innings while allowing just 15 hits in six starts.
Xavier returns to action on Thursday in the opening game of the 2017 BIG EAST Championships in Omaha, Neb., facing two-seed St. John's at 3:30 p.m. ET.
