15 of Xavier's athletic programs earned perfect scores for the 2015-16 academic year
INDIANAPOLIS -- Five Xavier University teams earned public recognition from the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their sport for the multiyear rate, ending with the 2015-16 academic year. Ten other Xavier teams earned a perfect score of 1,000 for the single-year measure from the 2015-16 academic year.
Â
"This honor is a credit to our student-athletes, coaches and academic staff," said Greg Christopher, Xavier University Director of Athletics. "Xavier has always placed an emphasis on academic excellence and the latest APR is further evidence of our programs' commitment to being leaders both on the field of play and in the classroom."
Â
Xavier's baseball, women's tennis, women's golf, women's soccer and women's swimming programs all earned the recognition, with each program earning a perfect 1000 score for the multiyear rate, which includes data from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-2016 academic years.
Â
This marks the 12th consecutive year that women's tennis has earned a perfect score, making it one of 93 teams nationwide that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year the measure has existed.
Â
Additionally, for the 2015-16 academic year, 15 of Xavier's 18 athletic programs earned a perfect 1,000. In addition to the five teams honored publicly, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's golf, men's soccer, men's swimming, women's indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball.
Â
Since the NCAA started the Public Recognition Awards program in 2004-05, Xavier has had 74 teams earn the annual award.
Â
This year, 1,203 teams are being recognized for academic performance: 746 women's teams and 457 men's teams or co-ed teams. The total number of teams being recognized increased by 132 from a year ago, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. A total of 306 schools had teams recognized with Public Recognition Awards.
Â
Â
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
Â
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
