Freshman becomes first Xavier women's golfer to earn the award
NEW YORK – Mikayla Fitzpatrick earned the first-ever BIG EAST Freshman of the Year award for Xavier women's golf on Thursday, capping a historic first year on the links.
The first XU freshman named to the All-BIG EAST First Team had a remarkable rookie season, playing in the top position for the Musketeers all season.
Fitzpatrick finished tied for 10th at the BIG EAST Championships in late April, firing a 230 (+14) over three rounds. Her performance, including a final round 73 (+1) helped lift the Musketeers into fourth-place overall at the tournament.
For the season, Fitzpatrick ranked seventh in the BIG EAST and led XU with a 76.48 stroke average in 29 rounds spanning 10 tournaments. That mark broke Shane Crutchfield's 2013 stroke average record for a Musketeer freshman (77).
Fitzpatrick posted five top-25 finishes overall, including a season-best tie for eighth at the Rio Verde Invitational – where she shot a 5-over 221 over three rounds.
Her low round for the year (69) tied a school record and came at the Yale Women's Fall Intercollegiate in October. Only eight golfers in women's golf history have carded a 69.
