Former Maryland baseball standout joins XU after three-year professional playing career
CINCINNATI – Xavier head baseball coach Billy O'Conner has announced the addition of Charlie White as volunteer assistant coach. White joins the Musketeers after a three-year professional playing career and was a decorated college baseball player at the University of Maryland.
"Charlie will be a great addition to our staff," said O'Conner. "He's going to bring an energy to teaching that our players will really respond well to. He's played high-level baseball his entire college and professional career and that has exposed him to some great coaching that I know he will be able to utilize as he transitions from playing into coaching."
White completed the 2016 season with the Joliet Slammers in the Frontier League, hitting .260 in 90 games with 61 runs scored and 35 RBI. He was one of six Joliet Slammers selected to the league's All-Star Game.
Prior to joining the Slammers in 2015, he played with the Boise Hawks, the Single A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, in the summer of 2014. The Cubs selected White in the 21st round of the 2014 draft after he earned All-ACC Second Team honors his sophomore and junior years at the University of Maryland. He departed Maryland as the Terp's all-time stolen base leader with 86 steals.
A native of Naperville, Ill., White earned All-State honors his senior year at Naperville North High School.
