Women's Soccer Starts off Season with 3-2 Win Over Cleveland State

Samantha Dewey scores a pair; Sydney Schembri scores first collegiate goal
CINCINNATI – Nate Lie's tenure as head coach of Xavier women's soccer started off with a win, after the Musketeers topped Cleveland State, 3-2, on Friday evening at the XU Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half, Xavier took a 3-0 lead in the second half, but CSU scored a pair in response and had several dangerous chances at the equalizer in the closing minutes.
62' | Xavier | Jessica Miller brought the ball up the field, playing to the right corner. Miller passed to Samantha Dewey on the right side of the net, and the junior worked the ball across the penalty box and buried it in the left corner.
70' | Xavier | Dewey struck again on a similar set-up from Emma Westwater after the junior transfer from Canisius played the ball to the right side of the net. She crossed to Dewey in front of the net on the left side where Dewey finished to put the Musketeers up 2-0.
72' | Xavier | Shortly after the Musketeers scored the insurance goal, Sydney Schembri added a second off a pass in front of the net from Emily Burton.
78' | Cleveland State | A Cleveland State corner kick sent the ball into a crowd right in front of the net. Aliani Lorenzo finished off the rebound to the left corner to cut into the Xavier lead.
84' | Cleveland State | CSU plays the ball straight on, getting behind goalkeeper Toni Bizzarro. Jenna Prathapa finished from straight on, inside the penalty box, to the left corner.
Xavier heads out on the road to finish up its opening weekend, traveling to Durham, North Carolina to take on the No. 12 Duke Blue Devils on Sunday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m.

- Samantha Dewey's two goals matches the second most in a single game in her Xavier career, matching her pair of goals in last year's win at Dayton. Her career high stands at three goals in a 5-0 win over Marian during her freshman season.
- Dewey led the team with three shots, all-on goal.
- Sydney Schembri's first tally of her college career goes down as the game-winner. Both of her shots on the night were on-frame.
