Billy O'Conner announced two more members of his coaching staff this week
CINCINNATI – Xavier baseball added two more to its coaching staff on Tuesday, as Billy O'Conner announced two former players will join the group in Matt Fallon and Drew Schmidt.
Schmidt joins the team as the Director of Baseball Operations, while Fallon will serve as a student assistant coach.
"We're very lucky to bring Drew back into an official capacity within the program," said O'Conner. "He shares the same vision and passion for Xavier Baseball that I do and will play a big part in the continued growth of the program."
Schmidt arrives back at Xavier from Turpin High School, where he had been coaching the baseball team. The former Musketeer was a teammate of O'Conner's and played the infield for XU from 2007-10.Â
A local product of McNicholas High School, Schmidt was the Co-Player of the Year in the GCL as a senior. He also helped the Musketeers win two championships, a regular season A-10 crown in 2008 and the A-10 Tournament title in 2009.
After hitting .320 or better as a junior and senior, he finished his playing career at XU ranked in the top-10 of six individual categories, including career games played, at-bats, walks, hit by pitch and runs scored.
Fallon was a part of BIG EAST Championship teams in 2016 and 2017, helping XU baseball reach the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.Â
"I'm excited to have Matt join our staff, as he was a 'coach on the field' during his two years here," said O'Conner. "I'm looking forward to having him share his knowledge and experience with our current players."
An outstanding defender, Fallon made just one error in center over 123 games. He also scored 64 runs, hit four homers, scored 41 runs and got on base at a .331 clip over his two seasons.Â
A two-time BIG EAST All-Academic pick, Fallon played big roles in both of XU's postseason pushes.
In 2016, he was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, the NCAA Tournament Nashville All-Regional Team and earned a spot on ESPN's Top 10 plays with a highlight catch in center field. Overall, he hit .360 in the postseason and scored the game-winning run in a walk-off win over St. John's in the BIG EAST Championships semifinal game.
Prior to Xavier, Fallon played two seasons at Black Hawk College and was an all-academic honoree during his time on the team. He played his prep baseball at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Ill.
