Xavier Swimming Reveals 2017-18 Schedule

Musketeers open season on Oct. 1 at Butler Quad meet
CINCINNATI – Xavier swimming announced the schedule for the 2017-18 season, starting in October wih the Butler Quad meet in Fishers, Ind. The season will concluded at the BIG EAST Championships in February, held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Notable:
- This year's event will feature Saint Louis, Indiana State, Valparaiso and Evansville in addition to host Butler's women's team.
- Last season, the women took the top spot, finishing with a 5-0 record as a team and grabbing six first place finishes.

- The Musketeers will face off with alumni in the only exhibition meet of the season.

Saturday, Oct. 14 - 1 PM - Terre Haute, Ind.
Notable:
- ISU completed its inaugural season of swimming in February, finishing seventh at the MVC Swimming and Diving Championships.
- Olivet Nazarene won the NAIA National Championships on both the men's and women's side last March.
- On the men's side, ONU returns NAIA Swimmer of the Year Magnus Poulsen who collected three individual national championships during his freshman year. Magnus Anderson also collected an individual national title.

Thursday, Oct. 19 - 1 PM – O'Connor Sports Center
Notable:
- Last season, the Musketeers traveled to CSU where they women fell by a final score of 159-128. The Musketeer men fell by a final score of 184-102.
- The women picked up wins in five events, including Caroline Gaertner's wins in the 100 back and 100 fly, Paxytn Drew taking the top spot in the 200 back, Becca Titterton winning the 200 breast ad the 400 free relay of Gaertner, Abigail Garner, Drew and Emily Conners.
- Patrick Hackett took the top spot in the 1,000 free on the men's side, while 2017 graduate Rodrigo Suriano picked up a pair of wins in freestyle sprints.
- CSU's men finished second at the 2017 Horizon League Championships, while the women finished fifth.

Saturday, Oct. 21 - 1 PM - Bowling Green, Ohio
Notable:
- Last season, Xavier hosted Bowling Green, collecting four first place finishes, including Emily Saugstad's first place finish in the 100 and the 200 free relay, with Paxtyn Drew, Caroline Gaertner, Abby Garner and Emily Conners with a time of 1:37.78, out touching the Falcon's "A" team by over two seconds.
- The Musketeer women fell by a final score of 141-111 to the Falcons.
- BGSU's women finished sixth of eight last season at the MAC Championships.
- The Musketeers last faced off with Tiffin in November of 2013. Last season, TU's men finished 5th of 7 teams in the GLIAC, while the women finished 7th of 8 squads.

Friday, Oct. 27 - Saturday, Oct. 28 - Morgantown, W.Va.
Notable:
- Xavier's women opened the day with a win in the 200 free relay, with Emily Conners, Abby Garner, Caroline Gaertner and Paxtyn Drew touching the wall in 1:37.43.
- Freshman Emily Conners added a pair of individual wins, taking the top spot in the 50 free and 100 free.
- On the men's side, the Xavier men took the top spot in the 200 medley relay with Sam Johanns, Matthew Dyer, Knox Hitt and Rodrigo Suriano.
- Matthew Dyer placed second in the 100 and 200 breast and Alex Wolfred took second in the the 1,650 free during the event last season.
- WVU's men finished second and the women finished fourth at the Big 12 Championships last February.
- The Seton Hall men won the 2017 BIG EAST Championship while the women finished third.

Saturday Nov. 4 - 1 PM - Granville, Ohio
Notable:
- At last year's meet, Xavier finished first in nine events, but the women fell, 150-107, while the men fell, 150.5-111.5.
- Denison's men finished third at the 2017 D-III National Championships. The Big Red women finished fourth.

Friday, Nov. 17 - Sunday, Nov. 19 - Cleveland, Ohio
Notable:
- At last season's meet, Xavier's women finished third of 14 teams with 884 points.
- Caroline Gaernter set a pair of NCAA B-Cut times, and school records, in the 100 fly and the 100 back.
- Xavier's men finished second behind host Cleveland State with 1320.5 points, scoring more than 500 points more than third place George Washington.
- Alex Wolfred took the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.66.
- Sam Johanns took the top spot in the 100 back with a time of 50.33.
- The Xavier men went 1-2-3 in the 50 fly, led in by Knox Hitt's time of 22.33. David Bunnell and Brandon Abboud finished second and third, respectively.

Wed., Nov. 29 - Saturday, Dec. 2 - Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State)
Notable:
- Four of the seven Musketeers who took part in last year's event return this season, Chase Baldwin, David Bunnell, Sam Johanns and Nathan Runyon.
- Baldwin swam as an individual in the 200 back and took a leg of the 800 free relay.
- Bunnell took part in the 100 fly, as well as the 200 free relay and 400 free relay.
- Johanns took part in the 100 back, as well as the 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay.
- Runyon competed in the 100 back and 200 back.

Friday, Jan. 5 - 6 PM - Indianapolis, Ind.
Notable:
- At last year's meet, the Musketeers took the top spot in six events as the men went 1-1, topping Ball State, 151-76, while falling to IUPUI 151-85 while the women went 0-2 with final scores of 136-101 (IUPUI) and 170-67 (Ball State).
- The men took the top spot in the 200 medley relay, as well as the 400 free relay. Sam Johanns also touched the wall first in the 100 back with a time of 52.17.
- The women also took the top spot in the 400 free relay with a team of Abigail Garner, Paxtyn Drew, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Conners.
- Last season, the IUPUI men finished second of six at the Summit League Championships. The women finished second of seven at the conference championships.
- At last year's MAC Championship, the Ball State men finished sixth of seven. Ball State's women finished eighth of eight.

Saturday, Jan. 13 - 2 PM - Pittsburgh, Pa.
Notable:
- Xavier totaled 596.1 points to 666.1 for Ohio and 623.9 for Duquesne at last season's meet at Ohio.
- Caroline Gaertner posted two of the top individual finishes of the day for Xavier, taking third in the 50 free and second in the 200 back.
- Katie Kerr posted a top-five time in the 500 free, finishing in 5:10.93 to score in second.
- Annie Cummins' time of 59.38 also stood in the top five, scoring in third.
- The Xavier women closed out the event with a second place finish in the 400 free relay for Abigail Garner, Paxtyn Drew, Gaertner and Emily Conners.
- Ohio finished fifth of eight teams at the MAC Championships last season.
- Duquesne finished second of 11 teams at the 2017 A10 Championship.

Friday, January 19 - 5 PM - Cincinnati, Ohio
Notable:
- The Musketeers last traveled to UC in October 2015, where they faced off with the Bearcats as well as Cleveland State.
- Cincinnati's women finished third of six at last season's American Athletic Conference Championships.
- The Bearcat men finished third of four at the conference meet.
- UC's men return Chris Bready, who competed in the 500 free and 1,650 free at last season's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
- Last season, Virginia Tech's women finished fifth of 13 at the ACC Championship and 31st at the NCAA Championships.
- Virginia Tech's men placed fourth of 11 teams at the conference championship and finished 22nd at the NCAA Championships.

Sunday, Jan. 21 - 12 PM - Fishers, Ind.
Notable:
- This year's Butler Invite will include Saint Louis, Southern Illinois and Valparaiso in addition to Xavier and the host Bulldogs.
- Last season, the women finished second of six teams.
- Xavier's women took the top spot in six events, including Katie Kerr winning the 500 free, Caroline Gaertner winning the 100 back and 100 fly, Emily Conners taking the top sot in the 50 free and 100 free and Conners, Paxtyn Drew, Abigail Garner and Gaernter winning the 400 free relay.
- The Xavier men finished third of six teams, and collected top-three finishes in nine events.
- The Musketeers closed out the event by taking the top spot inthe 400 free relay.

Saturday, Jan. 27 - 12 PM - Cleveland, Ohio
Notable:
- Last season the Musketeers hosted the Raiders for senior day. The men picked up the 131.5-127.5 win, while the women fell 144-117.
- The women picked up four event wins, including the 100 fly for Caroline Gaertner, the 200 back for Paxtyn Drew, and the 400 free relay for Emily Conners, Abigail Garner, Drew and Gaertner.
- The men won six events, including a pair for Matthew Dyer, who swept the breaststroke events. Alex Wolfred also won the 500 free and the men closed out the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay.

Saturday, Feb. 3 - 1 PM - Oxford, Ohio
Notable:
- At last season's meet at Miami, the Musketeers collected eight event wins, but women fell, 180-82 and the men fell 155-107.
- Emily Conners swept the freestyle sprints last season. Caroline Gaertner took the top spot in the 100 fly and the 100 back, and had a strong showing in the 200 back, taking second.
- Landon Clark scored the first win on the men's side in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.07. 2017 Graduates also collected event wins, with Rodrigo Suriano sweeping the freestyle sprints and Knox Hitt winning the 100 fly.
- At last year's MAC Championships, Miami's women finished fourth of eight while the men placed fourth of seven teams.

Wednesday, Feb. 21 - Saturday, Feb. 24 - Geneva, Ohio
Notable:
- The 2018 BIG EAST Championships will be held at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio for the first time.
- The Xavier men finished third at the BIG EAST Championships last season. The Musketeer men won six event titles for the meet, the second most event titles among men's team, behind Seton Hall.
- Matthew Dyer won a pair of BIG EAST Championships, sweeping the breaststroke events. His time in the 100 breast hit the NCAA B-Cut standard.
- Sam Johanns won the BIG EAST Championship in the 100 back.
- The Musketeers also won a pair of relay championships, winning the 200 and 400 medley relay setting school records in both.
- Xavier's men set eight school records in all, and a pair of NCAA B-Cut times, including Dyer's and 2017 graduate Knox Hitt's championship winning time in the 100 fly.
- Xavier's women finished fourth at last season's BIG EAST Championship and collected an individual title.
- Caroline Gaertner set a pair of school records and NCAA B-Cuts, winning the BIG EAST Championship in the 100 fly and coming in second in the 100 back.
- Xavier's women also set a new program best time in each of the relays during the week.
