Musketeers face Falcons on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 5 PM
CINCINNATI – Xavier women's soccer heads to Bowling Green for the first match-up against outside competition of 2017, facing the Falcons on Tuesday, August 8 at 5:00 p.m. in first-year head coach Nate Lie's unofficial debut on the sidelines for the Musketeers.
The Falcons, under the guidance of first-year head coach Matt Fannon, return 10 of 11 starters from a 2016 squad that went 8-10-1 (3-7-1 MAC). The returners account for 21 of BGSU's 23 goals and 13 of the team's 19 assists last season.
Among the returners are leading scorers Erica Hubert and Skylar Fleak, who scored seven and six times respectively. Also returning is goalkeeper Kathleen Duwve, who started 11 times and earned four shutouts.
Xavier returns 19 from last year's squad that finished 7-11-1. Among the returnees are junior forward Samantha Dewey, who was named Second Team All-BIG EAST last season after leading the squad with 20 points (8G, 4A) last season.
Dewey is among seven starters returning, including senior forward Kenadie Carlson who added 10 points on three goals and four assists last season. Up front, the Musketeers also return redshirt-senior Tori Doss, who provided a spark off the bench after suffering an arm injury last season.
The Musketeers also added a pair of forwards, freshman Sydney Schembri and junior transfer Emma Westwater, who transferred from Canisius, as well as a pair of freshmen midfielder/forwards, Emily Burton and Caitlyn Baron.
At midfield, the Musketeers bring back senior Maddie Tierney, who also logged minutes on the backline last season, as well as senior Skylar Groth, junior Jessica Miller and sophomore Courtney Lankford. Joining the returnees are redshirt freshman Carrie Lewis, who transferred from N.C. State, as well as true freshman Megan Sullivan.
Seniors Carly Alfano, Addie Englehart and junior Andie Kennard return to the Xavier defense which lost Courtney Kobashigawa, who led the Musketeers in minutes played last season, to graduation from last season. Freshman defenders Abi Janszen and Kara Sanders also join the Musketeers.
Sophomore Toni Bizzarro returns at goalkeeper, after splitting time in-goal with Rachel Piccus last season. The Musketeers lost Piccus to graduation but return junior Libby Grace and add freshman Camryn Yacks of Highlands Ranch, Colo., at goalkeeper.
Nate Lie was announced as head coach of the Xavier women's soccer program in May 2017. Lie joined the Musketeers from University of Cincinnati, where he was associate head coach.
Lie joined Cincinnati in 2013 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for his alma mater, Miami University.
Lie has been in charge of the UC defense under head coach Neil Stafford, a stingy unit that helped the Bearcats finish 11-5-4 in the fall of 2016 with a 0.99 goals against average and nine shutouts. UC has compiled a 42-30-12 record in the four years Lie was on Stafford's staff.
Lie is joined on staff by Kelsey Hunyadi, who joined Xavier from UC Davis, where she had served as assistant coach since February. Prior to working with the Aggies, Hunyadi spent a season as the director of soccer operations as Texas Christian University. Prior to TCU, Hunyadi spent time as an assistant at Youngstown State, Kentucky and Capital University.
Hunyadi played over 6,200 minutes through 64 matches during her college career. She began her collegiate playing career at Louisville in 2007, earning third-team All-BIG EAST as a freshman and earning BIG EAST Player of the week three times during a pair of seasons. Hunyadi played the final two seasons of her collegiate career at Kentucky, earning second-team All-SEC as a senior after a 14-goal, 38-point season.
Vince Gentile also joins the Musketeer coaching staff as assistant, bringing over 15 years of college, high school and club coaching experience to the Xavier coaching staff.
Gentile joined the staff from Kings Hammer Soccer Club in Cincinnati, where he served as technical director. Prior to Kings Hammer, Gentile spent four seasons as assistant coach at Saint Louis University.
Cincinnati native Taylor Spradling also joined Lie's staff as a volunteer assistant, coming to the Musketeers after working with the Cincinnati Sirens women's professional team as an assistant, specializing in goalkeeper development since 2015. Spradling also worked with the Ohio South Olympic Development Program and Fairfield Optimist Soccer Club since 2015.
Prior to returning to the Cincinnati area in 2015, Spradling spent a pair of seasons at Belmont University, working as an assistant specializing in goalkeeper development for the women's soccer program. Spradling has also previously spent time as an assistant coach for men's soccer at Cincinnati State and as head coach at Ursuline Academy.
The Musketeers will be opening the season against Cleveland State on Friday, August 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the XU Soccer Complex. The game marks the first Xavier Athletics event of the 2017-18 season, home or away.
