Taylor, Nelson and Sergi receive weekly awards for their parts in win over No. 9 Georgetown
NEW YORK – Three members of Xavier men's soccer – Cam Taylor, Zach Nelson and Samson Sergi – were honored by the BIG EAST Conference on Monday after playing big roles in a 1-0 overtime win over No. 9 Georgetown on Saturday night at XU Soccer Complex.
Taylor was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Nelson earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors.
Sergi was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
The Top 10 victory over Georgetown helped XU to a 1-0 start in league play and was part of a 2-0 week for the team, which extended its unbeaten streak to six straight – the longest for the program since 2014.
Taylor, who earns Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season, played the full match on Saturday and helped limit the Hoyas to just three shots on frame and just two corner kicks. He also scored the game-winning goal in the 44th minute of a 2-1 win over Cleveland State on Tuesday. Taylor has now scored goals in two of three matches and is tied for the team lead with four tallies on the year.
Nelson earned his first weekly award after registering his third shutout of the season against the Hoyas. The redshirt freshman made three saves in the match, all coming in the second half, and pushed a shot over the crossbar with 10 seconds left to force overtime. Overall, he faced 16 shots and lowered his GAA to 0.80 on the season. Nelson has now allowed one goal or less in five of seven matches for XU.
Sergi had the golden goal for XU, finishing off a header from a corner kick in the 92nd minute for his first game-winner in a Xavier uniform and fourth of the season. Sergi also recorded three shots in both of XU's matches last week and has scored a goal in four of his last six outings.
Xavier returns to action on Wednesday, heading to Lexington for a 7:30 p.m. match against Kentucky.
