Musketeers Fifth After Day One at Mary Fossum Invitational

Mikayla Fitzpatrick tied for 14th, Mikayla Smith tied for 17th after 36 rounds at Michigan State
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Xavier women's golf wrapped up day one of the Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday, checking in at fifth as a team with two players in the top 20 of the field.
Sophomore Mikayla Fitzpatrick (+8) and junior Mikayla Smith (+10) paced the Musketeers over the first 36 holes, both improving on first round 79's to finish in the top 20 individually.
Smith shot 75 (+3) in the afternoon, while Fitzpatrick carded a 73 (+1) for one of the best individual rounds of the day in the field. Fitzpatrick's 23 pars paced XU for the day.
Senior Lindsey Murray had a consistent afternoon, shooting 78-79 to place in a tie for 28th at 13-over. Murray shot 1-under on par 3's for the day, tying for second in the field.
Freshmen Morgan Tinsley and Ke'Asha Phillips both bounced back from first round scores of 82 with improved second rounds. Tinsley was 5-over in her second effort, finishing the day tied for 33rd while Phillips went 6-over to place in a tie for 38th.
As a team, Xavier ranked second in the field with 22 birdies on day one. Tinsley and Smith each had six apiece.

The Musketeers finished the day fifth of 10 competing teams, shooting a 318 in the first round and shaving 15 strokes collectively in the second round for a 303 team score.
Host Michigan State leads the field by a significant margin after a team score of 563 (-13) on day one. Toledo (+24), Charlotte (+28) and Northern Illinois (+40) round out the top four ahead of XU (+45).
Xavier wraps up the tournament on Sunday with one final round of 18 holes scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
