CINCINNATI Â - The Xavier women's tennis team start the spring by travelling to East Lansing, Mich., to take on the Michigan State Spartans on Friday, Jan. 19. The Musketeers faced the Spartans last year, but fell 5-2.
Coach Doug Matthews said about facing the Spartans, "We have played Michigan State the last couple of years. They are always very solid and disciplined. We need to play win, but also play within ourselves."
Xavier has a deep roster, returning six of the nine players from last year's team. The team is led by senior Lauren Ghidotti and junior Sophia Abelsion. Both players received MVP honors for their performances in the Cincinnati Invitational in the fall and look to carry momentum forward.
The Musketeers added senior Elizabeth Bagerbaseh as a transfer from UCF, while also bringing in two strong freshmen in Kaitlin Reuther and Ahmeir Kyle. These three players round out the lineup along with sophomores Lauren Fitz-Randolph and Rachael Reichenbach as well as junior Zoe Manion.
This is the Musketeers' first match since Oct. 16 and will be tough road test to open the the spring season. Coach Matthews added, "This is a great road test to start the year. I really like the way practices have been going and I am excited to watch us compete at a high level."
The Musketeers finished 11-11 last season with a 4-1 record in the BIG EAST, and look forward to having another good year.Â
