
Swimming Opens Spring Schedule at IUPUI with Ball State and UIndy

Musketeers travel to Indianapolis for four-team meet on Friday, Jan. 5
CINCINNATI – Xavier swimming returns to the pool this weekend, traveling to Indianapolis to face off with IUPUI, Ball State and the University of Indianapolis on Friday, January 5. Events are set to begin at 6:00 p.m.

- Xavier's women opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.04.
- Katie Kerr posted a pair of top-four finishes, in the 200 free (4th) and the 500 free (2nd).
- Caroline Gaertner took second in the 100 fly.
- Xavier accounted for two of the top three spots in the 100 back, led by Paxtyn Drew's second-place finish. Ali Fort placed third.
- The Xavier women closed out the event with a first place finish in the 400 free relay for Abigail Garner, Paxtyn Drew, Gaertner and Emily Conners.
- The Musketeers fell by final scores of 136-101 (IUPUI) and 170-67 (Ball State).
- On the men's side, Xavier opened the meet by out-touching the host Jags in the 200 medley relay to take first.
- The Musketeers accounted for two of the top three spots in the 200 free, with Alex Wolfred taking second and Brandon Abboud taking third.
- Sam Johanns touched the wall first in the 100 fly with a time of 52.17.
- Like the women, the Xavier men closed out the meet with a win in the 400 free relay.
- Xavier topped Ball State, 151-76, while falling to IUPUI 151-85.

WOMEN'S LAST TIME OUT |
- In Xavier's last full squad meet, the women took home third place from the CSU Magnus Cup.
- Xavier's women started the finals with a third place finish in the 200 free relay, with Emily Conners, Abby Garner, Tianna Vozar and Paxtyn Drew touching the wall in 1:33.93, the fastest time by a BIG EAST school in the event this season.
- Emily Conners posted the top finish by a Musketeer on opening day, placing second in the 50 free with a time of 23.39. The time is the fastest in the BIG EAST so far this season.
- Xavier's women opened Saturday's finals with Paxtyn Drew, Samantha White, Caroline Gaertner and Emily Conners posting a season-best time of 1:44.75 in the 200 medley relay.
- Emily Conners posted the top qualifying time in the 200 free, 1:51.38, the top time by a Musketeer this season. She placed fifth in the finals heat. Katie Kerr also posted a top-10 finish in the finals.
- Caroline Gaertner posted a season-best time of 55.61 in the 100 back to take third. Her time is the best by a Musketeer and the second fastest in the conference so far this season. Ali Fort and Paxtyn Drew each posted a top-seven finish in the finals heat as well.
- On the final day, Caroline Gaertner placed second in the 50 fly with a time of 25.25. Laura Dicus and Annie Cummins also placed in the top 10.
- Paxtyn Drew placed fourth in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.91.
- Emily Conners set the top time during prelims of the 100 free, 50.56, and dropped that time to 50.49 in the finals to place third. Conners' finals time is the fastest so far this season by a BIG EAST competitor.
- Ali Fort set the second fastest time during prelims of the 50 back, 26.35. In the finals, Fort and Paxtyn Drew tied for second with a time of 26.64.
- Xavier's women closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:24.44, the fastest time set in the event so far this season by a BIG EAST team.
The second-place finish for the Xavier A-relay, plus an eighth place finish by the B-relay, helped Xavier move past Cleveland State into third place of 15 teams, finishing one point ahead of CSU with 909 points. - Xavier also sent four women to compete at the USA Swimming Winter Nationals, where Caroline Gaertner became the first woman in program history to advance to a finals heat at the meet. Her performance earned BIG EAST Swimmer of the Week accolades.

- Xavier's men finished the CSU Magnus Cup in second place.
- On the first day, Xavier's men opened the meet by taking second in the 200 free relay, with a time of 1:23.93, the fastest time in the BIG EAST so far this season.
- Alex Sironen, Brandon Abboud, Snader and Hernadez posted a time of 3:22.47 in the 400 medley relay to take third to close out the first night. The time stands as the fastest in the BIG EAST so far this season.
- On Saturday, Matthew Dyer's time of 4:05.65 in the prelims of the 400 IM is the fastest time posted in the event by a BIG EAST competitor so far this season, shaving over five seconds off his team-best time. Chase Baldwin led the Musketeers in the finals, placing fifth with a time of 4:07.79. Bradley Jackson also posted a top-10 finish.
- David Bunnell posted a time of 49.80, the fastest so far in the BIG EAST this season, to take the top spot in the second fastest heat in the 100 fly finals. Brandon Abboud finished 10th in top heat of the 100 fly.
- In the 200 free, Enrique Hernandez led in three Musketeers in the top 10, followed in by Jared Ritz and Alex Wolfred.
- Matthew Dyer took third in the 100 breast with the fastest time posted in the BIG EAST this season, 55.97.
- Alex Sironen posted a time of 51.03 in the 100 back during prelims, the fastest time by a Musketeer this season and just .01 behind the fastest time in the BIG EAST. He finished fifth in the finals with a time of 51.11, and was followed in by Sam Johanns in sixth place. Nathan Runyon, David Bunnell and Landon Clark posted the top three times in the second fastest heat during the finals.
- On the final day, Nick Mahoney finished fifth in the mile with a time of 15:57.36, the fastest time so far in the BIG EAST in 2017-18. Mahoney was followed in by Alex Wolfred in sixth.
- In the 100 IM, Matthew Dyer posted a time of 52.16 to qualify, a new program record in the non-traditional event. In the finals, Dyer placed third.
- David Bunnell finished third in the 50 fly with a time of 22.81.
- Alex Sironen's time of 1:50.83 placed fourth in the finals of the 200 back, leading in four Musketeers who finished in the top 10 in the finals. Chase Baldwin, Nathan Runyon and Nick Mahoney also competed in the top heat. Baldwin's prelim time of 1:50.63 was the fastest for a Musketeer so far this season.
- Sam Johanns tied for fourth with a time of 46.46 in the 100 free, the fastest time for a Musketeer so far this season.
- Matthew Dyer posted a time of 2:04.01 in the finals of the 200 breast to take third, the fastest time for a Musketeer in 2017-18 and the second fastest time posted in the BIG EAST.
- Sam Johanns placed second in the 50 back with a time of 23.46. Alex Sironen, Nathan Runyon and Chase Baldwin also posted top-10 finishes.
- Landon Clark placed second with a time of 1:52.20 in the 200 fly, the fastest time by a Musketeer this season.
- Brandon Abboud finished fourth after posting the top qualifying time in the prelims of the 200 fly. Bradley Jackson finished fifth in the finals.
- Xavier's men closed out the event with a time of 3:06.12 in the 400 free for Sam Johanns, Robert Snader, David Bunnell and Alex Sironen.
- Xavier's men moved past George Washington on Sunday, collecting total of 1103.5 points to finish in second place behind host Cleveland State for the fourth-straight year.
- The Musketeers also sent five men to compete in the USA Swimming Winter Nationals.
