
Maddie Britton, Alex Wolfred Named Institutional Scholar-Athletes by BIG EAST

NEW YORK – Women's cross country and track and field student-athlete Maddie Britton and men's swimmer Alex Wolfred were named the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award winners from Xavier. The honor, which is presented by Sunkist, goes to a student athlete with a 3.0 grade point average or higher as a senior or graduate student. Each will receive $2,000 which may be applied to graduate or professional studies.
Britton is one of the most decorated female runners in Xavier school history. The two-time All-BIG EAST selection in cross country competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2017, becoming only the second runner to compete at the national championships in school history. She was also named the All-Ohio Division I Female Cross Country Runner of the Year last fall and was tabbed to the USTFCCA All-Region Team.
Britton placed eighth at the 2017 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, the highest finish for a Musketeer since joining the BIG EAST in 2013.The Bay Village, Ohio, native also earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors, the first Musketeer to earn the honors in cross country during BIG EAST action.
Britton finished her career ranked first in school history in the 5K record book and third in the 6K record book, respectively.
Her track and field career has been highlighted by competing in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Regionals in 2016, racing in the 10,000-meter run. She also holds the indoor school record in the 5,000-meter run.
Britton, a two-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection, has a 3.93 grade point average in nursing.
Currently in his senior season, Wolfred is the school-record holder in the 500 yard freestyle and has been one of Xavier's top performers in the distance freestyle events during his career.
At last year's conference meet, Wolfred earned All-BIG EAST honors in the 1,650 free after finishing the event in second place. As a junior, Wolfred also finished fourth in the conference in the 500 free with a school-record time of 4:29.05.
As a sophomore, Wolfred earned All-BIG EAST in two events, taking third place in the 500 free, and helping the Musketeers to a second-place finish in the 800 free relay. As a freshman, Wolfred took second in the 500 free to help the Musketeers win a second-straight BIG EAST Championship.
Wolfred has been named to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team three times. He has a 3.97 grade point average in health services administration.
Butler men's soccer player Eric Dick and Seton Hall softball player Alexis Walkden were named BIG EAST Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
