Baseball Gets Late Homer, Falls 6-4 in Game One at Indiana State

CINCINNATI - Matt Warkentin hit a solo homer in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as Xavier baseball fell 6-4 in game one of its weekend series at Indiana State on Friday at Bob Warn Field.
Xavier dropped to 7-14 with the loss, while Indiana State improved to 13-5.

• Xavier plays game two of its weekend series at Indiana State immediately. Game three is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

• Conor Grammes (2-for-4, RBI) and Chris Givin (2-for-3) led XU with two-hit days at the plate.
• Allby Major went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
• Matt Warkentin launched a solo homer in the ninth, his fourth of the season, and finished the afternoon 1-for-4.
• Nate Soria and Ryan Altenberger were hitless for XU, but both scored runs.

• Damien Richard got the start and went four innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out two.Â
• Trey Schramm came on after three batters in the fifth, tossing three full innings and ceding two earned runs while striking out two.
• Christian Glass finished out the game with a clean inning, striking out one in the eighth.

FOURTH INNING | Nate Soria was hit by a pitch and Ryan Altenberger worked a walk to start a rally for XU. Joe Gellenbeck batted next and was retired on a fielder's choice, moving Soria to third. Conor Grammes followed with a single to score Soria and keep runners on the corners. After Chris Givin was hit by a pitch, Allbry Major came up with an infield single to score Gellenbeck and give XU a 2-0 lead.
SIXTH INNING | Ryan Altenberger reached on a throwing error to start the inning, scoring on a single by Chris Givin.
NINTH INNING | Matt Warkentin launched a one out homer down the left field line, making it 6-4.
