Strong Singles Play Leads Musketeers to their 10th Win of the Season
03.24.18 | Women's Tennis
Cincinnati, OH – Xavier Women's Tennis pick up win number 10 on the season after a 5-2 win over the Villanova Wildcats. The Musketeers stay perfect at home, 5-0, and in BIG EAST play, 3-0.
Head Coach Doug Matthews commented on the match, "We are always happy to get the win. But, I felt the doubles point today really lacked energy on a couple courts and that can't happen in any match, especially in a conference match. We responded well in singles, getting big leads early on almost every court. We handled some adversity today which I think is good for us down the stretch. Wednesday against UC will be a great barometer for where our team is right now".
In doubles play, senior Lauren Ghidotti and junior Sophia Abelson won their sixth consecutive doubles match, making quick work of their opponent 6-1. Both the No. 2 and No. 3 teams battled hard, but Villanova took the other two matches to take a 1-0 lead.
Even though Villanova won the early doubles point, the Musketeers used all six singles matches to take control of the match. At No. 1 singles, freshman Ahmeir Kyle battled hard but dropped her match 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), her first loss in five matches. At No. 2 singles, Lauren Ghidotti won her third consecutive match and picked up win number nine with a score of 6-1, 6-4. Junior Sophia Abelson continued her strong play, improving to 11-3 at No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 win. Sophomore Rachael Reichenbach picked up win No. 10 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles. Graduate transfer Elizabeth Bagerbaseh also picked up win No. 10 of the season, she won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Lauren Fitz-Randolph won in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6 singles to pick up her eighth win of the season.
The depth of the Musketeers showed up in singles play and helped the Musketeers earn the points needed to pick up the win. The next for Xavier is on Wednesday, Mar. 28 against Cincinnati.
