SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Matt Warkentin homered for a second straight game but Xavier baseball couldn't make an early lead stand up in a 9-6 loss on Saturday against Seton Hall at Owen T. Carroll Field.

Xavier fell to 12-23 (2-4 BIG EAST), splitting a doubleheader but dropping its second straight league series.

The Pirates improved to 14-13-1 overall (2-1 BIG EAST) with the win.

• The Musketeers return to action on Wednesday, playing at crosstown rival Cincinnati at 6:30 p.m. inside Marge Schott Stadium.

XU AT THE PLATE

• Matt Warkentin homered for a second straight game, going 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a walk. The junior now has a team-best nine homers on the year and has left the yard in three of his last five games.
• Warkentin is now hitting .425 (17-for-40) with eight runs scored, four homers and 12 RBI in his last nine games.
• Allbry Major had another multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored, a double and a homer. The freshman now has two longballs on the season, both coming in BIG EAST play.
• Conor Grammes went 2-for-5, collecting his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season.
• Joe Gellenbeck (1-for-3, R, RBI), Chris Givin (1-for-4, R), Natale Monastra (1-for-3) and Mitch Gallagher (1-for-4) also provided hits for XU.
• Givin extended his team-best hitting streak to nine straight games with the hit. During the streak, he's hitting .326 (14-for-43) with nine runs scored and eight RBI.
• Major extended his team-best reached base streak to 14 straight games.
• Xavier has now homered in five straight games.

XU ON THE MOUND

• Conor Grammes made his first career start and went three innings, allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out four.
• Trevor Olson (1-2) took the loss in relief, allowing five earned runs in 1.2 innings of work.
• Evan Miller finished things out, going 3.1 innings and striking out six while allowing two earned runs.

HOW XU SCORED

FIRST INNING | Chris Givin led off the game with a triple to left center, scoring on an RBI single to left by Joe Gellenbeck to give XU the lead two batters into the game. Matt Warkentin then stepped up and blasted a two-run homer to left center to give the Musketeers a 3-0 lead.
THIRD INNING | With two outs, Allbry Major launched a solo homer to left field to give XU a 4-1 lead.
SEVENTH INNING | Ryan Altenberger reached on a one out error, going to third on a single to center by Conor Grammes. With runners on the corners, Nate Soria lifted a fly ball to center to score Altenberger and get XU within one at 6-5.
NINTH INNING | Allbry Major doubled to right with one out, advancing on a wild pitch and scoring on a fielding error by the SHU second baseman.
