Wood Tied for Fifth, Men's Golf in Seventh After Day One at BIG EAST Championships

CALLAWASSIE ISLAND, S.C. – Garrett Wood is tied for fifth, pacing the men's golf team after the first round of the 2018 BIG EAST Championship on Sunday afternoon.
XU is just four strokes back of third place, while Wood is the same distance back of the top spot after earning All-BIG EAST First Team honors on Friday.
Wood finished the first round shooting a 73, one stroke above par, with four of Xavier's seven birdies. Wood was 1-over on the front nine after a blistering start saw him go 3-under through six holes only to run into a triple bogey on the par-4, 462 yard seventh hole. He recovered, however, finishing the front 1-over and recording one birdie on the back nine for an even 36.
The freshman leads the competition in par 5 scoring, averaging a 4.25 (-3).
Martin Jaramillo entered the clubhouse with a 76 (+4) after 18 holes. Jaramillo finished day one in a four-way tie for 17th. The freshman earned a team-high 12 pars on the first day.
Fox Morrissey finished tying for 23rd, shooting a total of 80 (+8).
Eduardo Rivera finished in 43rd, ending the day with an 87 (+15). Rivera had the second-best par 3 average, carding a 2.75.

The Musketeers finished the day with a team total of 313 (+25). Xavier fell one stroke short of sixth and is just four strokes outside the top-three.
Georgetown ended the first day in the lead with a team total of 289 (+1).
Xavier returns to the course Monday morning to compete in the second round of the three-day BIG EAST Championship.
