Baseball Erupts for 23 Runs in BIG EAST Win Over Villanova

Xavier improved to 19-34 (6-10 BIG EAST) with the win, while Villanova dropped to 8-37 (0-16 BIG EAST) while allowing a season-high 23 runs to XU.
Freshman lefty Nick Zwack was outstanding, striking out nine over six innings of one-run ball as XU bashed three homers to win in dominating fashion.
The run total represented the most for an XU team since May 15, 2007 in a 23-11 win over Toledo.

• XU scored a season-high 23 runs and collected a season-high 25 hits
• Xavier now has a homer in 17 of its last 23 games and the Musketeers are up to 61 homers as a team this season, which matches last season's total and is tied for third all-time in program history for a single season. XU's 122 homers over the last two years are the most in successive seasons in program history.
• Chris Givin tied a career-high with a five hit day, going 5-for-6 at the leadoff spot with four runs scored and three RBI.
• Givin's batting average is now up to a team-leading .348 for the season and the junior shortstop is hitting .619 (13-for-21) in his last four games.
• Natale Monastra matched Givin with a career-best five hit day, going 5-for-6 with a homer, a career-high four runs scored and two RBI.
• Junior Matt Warkentin put together a 3-for-7 batting line, scoring twice and knocking in four runs.
• Mitch Gallagher had a strong day, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and four RBI, three of which came on a bases clearing double in the fifth.
• Blaine Griffiths came off the bench to go 2-for-3 with a run scored. The senior has three multi-hit performances in his last four games.
• Ryan Fournier came in as a defensive replacement and went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a solo homer in the seventh inning.
• Nate Soria homered for the second straight game, a grand slam shot in the fifth, giving him seven homers on the year as part of a 2-for-5 game with three runs scored and four RBI.
• Conor Grammes (1-for-3, R), Ryan Altenberger (1-for-2, 2 R) and Andrew Sexton (1-for-2, 2 R) also contributed hits for XU.

• XU pitching combined to tie a season-high for 13 strikeouts on the day.
• Freshman Nick Zwack was brilliant for a second straight start, going six innings and allowing just one hit and one earned run. The lefty struck out a career-high nine and came back from a long rain delay to add three perfect innings to his ledger.
• Zwack finished his season on a high note, allowing just two runs and going 2-0 with 13 strikeouts in 13 innings covering his last two starts.
• Senior Christian Glass came on in relief and gave XU three scoreless frames of relief, tying a career-high with four strikeouts and picking up his second save of the season.

FIRST INNING | Xavier batted around in the first inning, beginning with a leadoff single to left center by shortstop Chris Givin. After a base hit to left by Nate Soria and a walk of Conor Grammes, Matt Warkentin launched a ball to the fence in left field for a two-run double. Joe Gellenbeck batted next, lifting a fly ball to center to bring Grammes home. With one on, Natale Monastra smacked a two-run homer to left center to make it 5-0. With two outs, Ryan Altenberger walked and Andrew Sexton singled up the middle to give XU another threat. Chris Givin capped the frame by doubling off the wall in left field, giving XU seven runs on six hits in the inning.
SECOND INNING | Joe Gellenbeck walked with one out and Natale Monastra singled to left before Mitch Gallagher singled through the left side, scoring Gellenbeck to make it 8-0. Monastra then came sprinting home on a passed ball to score the second run of the inning, making it 9-0.
FOURTH INNING | Coming out of an hour and a half rain delay, Andrew Sexton started another rally with a one out walk. Chris Givin followed with a single to put two on for Nate Soria, who reached on an error to load the bases. A wild pitch then scored Sexton and moved runners to second and third. With two outs, Matt Warkentin reached on a two-run error by the VU third baseman to make it 12-1.
FIFTH INNING | Natale Monastra singled up the middle to lead it off, going to second as Mitch Gallagher drew a walk. Ryan Altenberger followed with a single to center to load the bases. With one out, Chris Givin punched a single through the right side to score Monastra. Nate Soria then batted and smacked a grand slam to left center to make it 17-1. Blaine Griffiths entered the game to pinch hit and immediately singled to left to kickstart another rally for XU. Matt Warkentin followed with a single through the left side before Natale Monastra was hit by a pitch with two outs to load the bases for a second time in the inning. Mitch Gallagher then struck a double to left center to clear the bases and give XU a 20-1 lead.
SIXTH INNING | Ryan Fournier led off with a single to left, advancing on a walk by Chris Givin. With two on and one out, Blaine Griffiths singled to center to load the bases. Matt Warkentin batted next and brought two more home, making it 22-1 with a long single off the wall in left.
SEVENTH INNING | Ryan Fournier homered to left field, a solo shot, to give XU a 23-1 lead.
