Pitcher/Outfielder second Musketeer to earn the honor since 2015
NEW YORK - Xavier baseball freshman Allbry Major was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, making him the second Musketeer to earn the honor since 2015. The dual threat was also named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as the league announced its year-end awards after a league-wide coaches vote.
The Indianapolis, Ind. native was a standout for XU both on the mound and in the outfield during the 2018 season, hitting .291 overall with a pair of homers and 21 RBI.
As a pitcher, he posted a 4.96 ERA in 16 appearances, including eight starts, throwing 61.2 innings and striking out 54.
In conference play, Major raised his game offensively to post a .319 batting average with three homers and 10 RBI in 13 starts. He was seventh in the league in innings pitched, racking up 33.2 innings in BIG EAST action.
Major becomes the second XU player to earn the award since the Musketeers joined the BIG EAST for the 2014 season. In 2015, Nate Soria was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year after hitting .335 to become XU's first major award winner in the conference.
Xavier finished the season 20-35 overall and 7-11 in league play, missing the postseason for just the second time since 2014. XU has won the BIG EAST in three of its five years in the league, including back-to-back titles in 2016 and 2017.
