James Liber broke onto the scene quickly in 1947, finishing second on the Musketeers in rushing. He led the team in rushing in 1948 with a yards-per-carry average of 5.83.
Liber, a member of teh Legion of Honor, fell upon hard times during XU's excellent 10-1 "Salad Bowl" season of 1949. He was sidelined in the regular season but played in the 1950 Salad Bowl victory over Arizona State.
Liber, a fine halfback out of Cincinnati's Purcell High School, enjoyed an excellent senior season in 1950. XU finished 8-1 with wins over Louisville (36-13), Miami of Ohio (7-0), and Dayton (28-21).
