UMass Head Coach Marnie Dacko
On Xavier:
“They rededicated themselves. Ta’Shia and Amber are outstanding players and Special Jennings has brought her game to a new level; Tyesha Moss played well. It’s hard to keep a team that shoots 40 percent from three down.”
On XU’s outside shooters:
“Katie Rutan, Specia Jennings and Tyesha Moss are all great shooters. They played together as a team and I think we learned something from that.”
On her team:
“We were intimidated and reluctant.”
Head Coach Kevin McGuff
On today’s game:
“We pride ourselves on our defense and our rebounding. We got them shooting outside shots and they struggled to make them especially in the beginning of the game.”
Senior guard Dee Dee Jernigan
Off the bench:
“Depends on what I see is how I come out [off the bench]. We were passing the ball around the perimeter and not penetrating the zone, they had us doing what they wanted us to do. I came in and tried to penetrate the zone, I wanted to speed the game up.”
Junior center Ta’Shia Phillips
On perimeter players and team’s balance:
“We work on balance in our offensive game every day. We knew they were going to double down on the post and try to take [Amber and I] away, but we had very apt shooters who shoot whenever and whenever they want to.”
“One of our added benefits this year is that we have depth not just in numbers but in talent.”
On Dee Dee Jernigan:
[Dee Dee] gives an added spark; you never know in which way she is going to add. She can shoot the ball, get to the basket, pass and defend- she can contribute in all areas. [Today] we needed someone to be an aggressor and Dee Dee, being a driver, helped us be more aggressive and open up the passing lanes.”
On UMass’:
“You can feel when you have gotten to [a team]. Most teams come out as if they are not intimidated and they start to shoot the ball freely, but once they get a contested shot they start to question themselves.”
On rankings:
“Coach [McGuff] doesn’t really get us into rankings. We look at them and then move on. We focus on practice and the next game.”
On this year’s NCAA Tournament:
“Rankings don’t help you win games. We are focusing on playing our game to help us get as far as we can go. We worry about the game that is coming up next and how we are going to win that one.”
