CINCINNATI - Three players scored career highs and Xavier shot its best percentage of the year but it was not enough for the Musketeers who were beaten by No. 3/5 Stanford, 80-64, on Friday afternoon at Cintas Center.
The Musketeers dropped their third contest in a row and are 1-3 overall heading into their next game against South Carolina. The Cardinal improve to 4-1 on the season.
Redshirt junior Amber Gray, and sophomores Lynette Holmes and Shatyra Hawkes each had career afternoons and combined to score 44 of the Musketeers' points. Holmes led all Xavier players with 18, Hawkes scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half, and Gray added 11 points. Redshirt junior Jessica Pachko had a team-high nine rebounds.
As a squad, the Musketeers shot 43.8 percent from the floor and hit seven 3-pointers. Stanford's strong second-half shooting was the difference in the game, after the Cardinal went into the break leading by one, 33-32. Stanford hit 54.3 percent of its shots in the second half, compared to 37.8 in the first half.
Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike was the catalyst in the first half scoring 11 points, including eight of the team's first 11 points. She was held scoreless by Xavier the remainder of the half as the Musketeers battled to close a seven-point deficit.
Gray started the push with her first 3-pointer of the year cutting the lead to four. Holmes, who tied her previous career high in the first half alone, put the Musketeers ahead, 23-21, by hitting an off balanced shot in the lane and adding the foul shot at the 7:49 mark.
A strong first half from the free-throw line was crucial to the Musketeers trailing by just one point going into the half. The Musketeers were a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
The second half started with a 15-7 run for the Cardinal as N. Ogwumkie started to find her rhythm again. She scored 11 points in the opening minutes of the half to help Stanford build a 56-42 lead.
Xavier head coach Amy Waugh called a timeout and helped spark the Musketeers to seven straight points. Gray converted an old-fashion 3-point play and Hawkes slipped through the defense for a layup and followed it by stepping back and hitting a long 3-point shot. The rally made it a 56-50 contest and brought the crowd of 927 to its feet with 9:45 remaining.
The Cardinal called a timeout and looked to N. Ogwumike again who finished the game with 11 additional points. She finished with a game-high 33 points and 14 rebounds. Up until the seven-minute mark Xavier had held Stanford to just one 3-pointer, but that changed when Taylor Greenfield and Lindy La Rocque hit back-to-back treys to put Stanford back ahead by 13.
Holmes and Hawkes set their previous career highs of 12 against Mississippi State earlier this season. Gray bested her previous career high set against Eastern Kentucky in the season opener this year.
Xavier returns to Cintas Center on Nov. 30 to face South Carolina. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
