Musketeers Top Bulldogs in Exhibition Play

Sumner led Musketeers with 23 points
CINCINNATI - In it's lone public exhibition of the season, Xavier men's basketball topped the Ferris State Bulldogs, 80-56, at Cintas Center on Saturday afternoon. Three Musketeers hit double-figures, led by Edmond Sumner's 23 points. Trevon Bluiett posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards.
Xavier held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first four minutes of the game including Sumner taking his defender coast to coast drawing the foul. Malcolm Bernard dished out two early assists including the lob to Sumner for the one handed dunk. The Musketeers outscored Ferris State 11-6 on fast break opportunities in the first 20 minutes.
 
Xavier ended the first half with the largest lead of the game to that point, 35-23, over the Bulldogs. Sumner and Bluiett matched for team-high with eight points each, followed by Bernard and Macura, with seven points each.
Xavier dominated the paint, with a 20-8 advantage down low in the first half. The Bulldogs and Musketeers each had nine turnovers in the first half, but the Musketeers outscored the Bulldogs 9-0 on points off turnovers in the first 20.
To start the second half, the Musketeers continued its run to close the first half outscoring the Bulldogs 14-3, extending the Musketeers lead to 17 points. Xavier steadily built the lead throughout the second half. In the final five minutes, Xavier used a 10-0 run, fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers by Macura, to go up 75-47 and put the Bulldogs away.
 
The Musketeers defeated Ferris State by a final score of 80-56. Sumner led the Musketeers with 23 points, three steals and six assists. Xavier shot 51 percent from the floor, including outscoring the Bulldogs 38-22 in the paint. The Musketeers finished with a 47-41 advantage on the boards.
Bluiett went 6-6 from the free throw line and was 6-12 from the field and led in most minutes played, 35. Bluiett also grabbed a 10 rebounds, matching Bernard for team-high.
Macura shot 6-6 from the field goal as well as 3-3 from the 3 point line for 16 points.
Xavier never trailed while their largest lead was 80-51 with 1:23 remaining in the game.
The Musketeers open the regular season on Friday, when Xavier hosts Lehigh at 7:00 p.m. The game will be available on Fox Sports College.
