Contributions will provide resources to fund stipends to Xavier Basketball managers
CINCINNATI - Xavier University will celebrate a longtime-champion of its athletic success, Dr. Bill Daily, during Saturday's men's basketball game against Wake Forest. Daily is former chairman of the Xavier Athletic Board and a retired communications arts professor whose behind-the-scenes contributions helped build Xavier Basketball into the program it is today.
In conjunction with the honor, Xavier Athletics' All For One Fund announced The Coach Daily Basketball Managers Endowment, benefiting the managers who, like Daily, work tirelessly to advance the team with jobs, both big and small, that often go overlooked. The endowment will ensure that Xavier Basketball has the resources to provide managers with a stipend each year.
Daily, who also served as assistant coach for the men's basketball team, is credited as the architect who designed a plan for Xavier Basketball to become a nationally-prominent basketball program. Daily's vision set the foundation for the program to reach its current stature.
In 1978, as the University contemplated moving Athletics to Division III or potentially dropping varsity athletics all together, Daily led a small group that cautioned against the idea and advocated for putting more emphasis athletics as a platform for visibility for the entire university. Daily eventually led the search committee that hired Bob Staak as head coach for Xavier men's basketball, leading the Musketeers to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1961.
A two-time Xavier graduate and chair for the Communications Arts Department, Daily was also instrumental in efforts for the construction of Cintas Center. Daily acted as a liaison between the academic departments and athletics, advocating the benefits of the on-campus arena.
Daily's children began the endowment in honor of their father, with the hope that others who know his story and the impact he has had on Xavier Basketball will add to the fund and to the remarkable Daily legacy.
