James Farr, Remy Abell, Myles Davis, Trevon Bluiett and J.P. Macura all honored after fan, coach vote
CINCINNATI – Xavier announced the winners of the 2015-16 men's basketball postseason team awards on Monday. A combination of fan votes and coaches' votes determined the winners for a second straight year.
Xavier finished 28-6 overall this past season with a school-record No. 9 final AP Poll ranking and made its 10th NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years.
Senior Remy Abell won the Ernest A. Staak Memorial Award, an honor which is presented annually to the player who best exemplifies the elder Staak's life, including his unselfish dedication and love of the game of basketball.
Â
Abell started 68 of Xavier's 71 games during his two-year career, including all 34 games his senior year. He established himself as one of the best defenders in the BIG EAST Conference.
Â
Junior Myles Davis earned the Connie Brown Award, an award presented annually to the most inspirational player. It honors the memory of the late Constance Brown, a woman whose life and death has inspired many. Although not a Xavier alum, Connie and her husband, the late Dr. Michael Brown, adopted Xavier as their school. They were great Xavier sports fans and extended their care and concern to all of Xavier's students. Their generosity and friendliness made them Xavier legends.
Â
Davis was third on the team in scoring at 10.8 ppg. (28th in the BIG EAST) and led the team in assists (eighth in the BIG EAST at 4.1 apg.) and assist-to-turnover ratio (fourth in BIG EAST at 2.2). Davis was first on the team and second in the BIG EAST in free-throw shooting (.854). He was second on the team and eighth in the BIG EAST Conference in 3-point field goals per game (1.9) and was second on the team and 11th in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goal percentage (.381). One of the highlights of his junior year was his triple-double that he recorded vs. Providence on Feb. 17.
Â
Senior James Farr won the Gordon E. Nead "Most Improved Player" Award. The late Gordon E. Nead was a 1927 Xavier graduate and was also Athletic Director at Xavier. This award is presented annually to the team's most improved player.Â
Â
Farr, a member of the Sports Illustrated "All-Glue Team," led Xavier in rebounding this season at 7.8 rpg., which ranked third in the BIG EAST. He was fourth on the team and 30th in the BIG EAST in scoring at 10.7 ppg. Farr, who had 18 points and 15 rebounds in Xavier's NCAA First Round win over Weber State on March 18, averaged 13.4 ppg. over his last eight games on 57.7 percent (41-of-71) shooting from the field. Farr posted 19 double-figure scoring games and 10 double-figure rebounding games as a senior.Â
Â
Sophomore Trevon Bluiett earned the Lew Hirt Society Award, an honor presented annually to the player that stood out in some significant way during the season.
Â
Bluiett, a USA TODAY Third-Team All-America and First Team All-BIG EAST selection, led Xavier in scoring at 15.1 ppg. (ninth in the BIG EAST), 3-point field goals made (fourth in the BIG EAST at 2.3 mpg.) and 3-point percentage (fifth in BIG EAST at .398). He also led the team in double-figure scoring games (31) and times as team's leading scorer (16). He was third on the team in rebounding at 6.1 rpg. (15th in the BIG EAST).
Â
Sophomore J. P. Macura won the George E. "Skip" Prosser Award, an award presented annually to the player who exemplifies the qualities that Coach Prosser admired. Like Coach Prosser, this player showed great toughness, an untiring work ethic, a burning competitive spirit, and he never backed down from a challenge.
Â
Macura, who was named the BIG EAST Sixth Man Award winner, gave Xavier added energy and a lift down the stretch, including 10.6 ppg. over his last 15 games on 48.6 percent (54-of-111) shooting, including 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from 3-point territory.
