Abbey Bessler Named GCNKWSA College Sportswoman of the Year

The junior volleyball player was recognized at the 23rd Annual Girls' and Women's Sports Awards Ceremony
CINCINNATI – Xavier volleyball player Abbey Bessler (Hebron, Ky./St. Henry HS) was named the 'College Sportswoman of the Year' by the Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Women's Sport Association (GCNKWSA) on Monday night.
 
The 23rd Annual Girls' and Women's Sports Awards Ceremony was held at the Schiff Banquet and Conference Center at Cintas Center. Bessler was one of eight women to earn the recognition as the award was given to one female in eight different college sports.
 
Bessler, the 2015 BIG EAST Player of the Year, helped the Musketeers post an 18-12 overall record with a 14-4 mark in BIG EAST play last fall.
 
"It's an honor to be recognized as one of the top female athletes in the area," said Bessler. "I'm very humbled to be a part of this event and honored to be here with so many other outstanding and inspiring women."

• 2015 AVCA All-Region Selection (3-time AVCA All-Region Team Selection)
• 2013 AVCA East Region Rookie of the Year
• Finished the year ranked fifth in the conference in points (4.19 p/s), fourth in kills (3.72 k/s) and ninth in digs (3.41 d/s)
• Finished the year ranked 49th nationally in total attacks and 64th in attacks per set
• Set the school record with 33 kills in a five-set win over St. John's on Sept. 26… the 33 kills ranked seventh nationally in five-set matches.
• Became the 12th member of the XU 1,000 Kills-1,000 Digs Club in the win at Providence on Oct. 31
• Was named BIG EAST Player of the Week twice in 2015 and collected weekly honor roll honors seven times (has earned BIG EAST weekly honor roll honors 14 times)
• Finished the year with 16 double-doubles on the year… also recorded 20 or more kills in match six times
• Finished with 1,267 total attacks to rank sixth in single-season Xavier history
• Finished with 490.5 points to rank eighth in single-season Xavier history
 
The Greater Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky Women's Sports Association, a non-profit organization affiliated as a Women's Sports Foundation community action program, sponsors an awards dinner to recognize and honor the best female athletes and coaches at the club, high school and college and masters levels.
 
There are over 50,000 girls and women participating in competitive sports in our region and we recognize and honor more than 50 of the top athletes, including the College Sportswoman of the Year, the High School Sportswoman and the High School and College Coaches of the Year. The awards dinner is a festive evening with more than 500 people in attendance, emceed by local female TV personality, Betsy Ross, WXIX-TV Sports Reporter, and Cammy Dierking, WKRC-TV News Anchor, motivational speaker and a prominent female sport figure in our community.
