Musketeer Madness: Xavier Fans Introduced to Basketball Squads on Friday Night

Ashley Gomez and Kaiser Gates claimed bragging rights, while the White squads came out on top

CINCINNATI - Musketeer Madness opened up the 2017-18 basketball season at Cintas Center in front of 6,150 fans on Friday night. The evening included intrasquad scrimmages for both the women's and men's teams, along with three-point shootouts for both squads.

WOMEN'S 3-PT SHOOTOUT

Musketeer Madness kicked off with the women's three-point shootout with freshman Alyson Reiff, junior Kindell Fincher and sophomore Ashley Gomez, competing against each other. Gomez beat out Reiff and Fincher to take the three-point title by scoring 18 points.

WOMEN'S SCRIMMAGE

After the three-point contest, the women's team scrimmaged for 10 minutes with the White squad defeating the Blue squad, 16-12. The White squad was led by freshman Jordyn Dawson who scored seven points, while freshman A'riana Gray led the team in rebounds with four. Anniina Äijänen led the Blue squad with seven points and three rebounds.

MEN'S 3-PT SHOOTOUT

Following the men's basketball team introductions, senior Kerem Kanter, freshman Paul Scruggs, freshman Elias Harden and junior Kaiser Gates, competed against each other in the three-point shootout. Kanter and Gates both scored 13 points in the first round, but Gates prevailed in the second round by outscoring Kanter, 20-7.

MEN'S SCRIMMAGE

Ending the night, the men scrimmaged for 10 minutes and gave fans a glimpse of the upcoming season. Sophomore Tyrique Jones and senior Trevon Bluiett led the White squad to a 20-17 victory over the Blue squad. Jones led the team with eight points, while Bluiett followed with seven. They both led the team in rebounds with three apiece. The Blue squad was led by sophomore Quentin Goodin, who went 3-for-5 from the field, with six points.

SEASON OPENERS

The women's team opens its 2017-18 season with a home-opener on November 11th at 5 p.m. against New Hampshire, while the men's team opens its season with an exhibition game against Thomas Moore on November 4th at 4 p.m.
