Sumner earned 2015-16 freshman All-America honors
CINCINNATI - Xavier University redshirt sophomore guard Edmond Sumner announced today that he is declaring for the 2017 NBA Draft.
"I want to thank Edmond for his efforts over the past three years," said Xavier head coach Chris Mack. "He will forever be a part of the Xavier family. We wish him all the success in the world throughout his rehabilitation and comeback as he prepares for a pro career."
Sumner announced his decision this afternoon on Twitter:
"First let me start by saying these three years at Xavier have been the best of my life. I have certainly been presented with some ups and downs but they have only served to make me a stronger person. This decision was very hard for me because of the love I have for X. After weighing my options with my family, I have decided to enter the 2017 NBA Draft, fulfilling a lifelong dream. I want to thank Coach Mack and the rest of the staff for believing in me and giving me a chance when no one did! I'll always be grateful for that. Xavier Nation I will always love you!"
Sumner, a preseason First Team All-BIG EAST selection by the league coaches, led Xavier in assists at 5.0 apg. this season before suffering a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 29 vs. St. John's at Madison Square Garden. Sumner was second on the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg., including a team-high 16.9 ppg. in BIG EAST play.
Sumner earned 2015-16 freshman All-American honors from CollegeInsider.com in addition to being a unanimous selection by the league coaches to the BIG EAST Conference All-Freshman Team.
