CINCINNATI – The Atlanta Tipoff Club announced that Xavier University guard and National Player of the Year Candidate Trevon Bluiett is one of the 10 national semifinalists competing to receive the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy for Men's College Player of the Year. Four finalists will be selected from this list of 10 by the Naismith Awards master voting academy.
Fans will be able to support their favorite Naismith Trophy finalist by visiting naismithtrophy.com/vote from March 19-30 to cast their ballot and help decide the winner. The fan component counts for five percent of the vote. On April 1st, the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy will be awarded during the Naismith Awards Brunch at Pearl Stable in San Antonio.
Xavier's National Player of the Year and All-America candidate is also on the late season John R. Wooden Award and the Julius Erving Award final 10 lists. He made the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy (United States Basketball Writers Association national player of the year award). Xavier graduate David West, currently a Golden State Warrior, won the AP and USBWA National Player of the Year awards in 2003. Bluiett is also on the watch list for the Lute Olson Award, CollegeInsider.com's National Player of the Year award.
Bluiett leads the team and is seventh in the BIG EAST in scoring at 19.2 ppg. and also leads the team in rebounding at 5.6 rpg., which ranks 15th in the BIG EAST. Bluiett, who is third in the BIG EAST in 3-point field goals per game at 3.1, is closing in on the Xavier career 3-point field goals record. His total of 303 career 3-pointers trails only Romain Sato, who connected on 307 from 2000-04.
Bluiett, who has scored 20 or more points in 16 games this season, has moved up to second place on XU's all-time scoring list with 2,142 points. Bluiett has scored 1,049 career points in BIG EAST regular season play, one of only 42 players have reached 1,000 career BIG EAST points in league history.
"Our semifinalists have played incredibly well this season, and as we approach postseason play, they have the chance to win the 50th Citizen Naismith Trophy during this celebratory season," said Eric Oberman, executive director of the Atlanta Tipoff Club.
Celebrating its 50th year by honoring past winners, the Citizen Naismith Trophy has been presented to 45 unique winners at 31 schools over the last 49 years, starting with its first presentation to UCLA's Lew Alcindor, now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, in 1969.
