Musketeers look to continue strong defensive play, have shut out five of last six opponents

CINCINNATI – Xavier men's soccer gets back to BIG EAST play, hosting Villanova on Saturday at UC's Gettler Stadium for Senior Day. The match will kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Xavier enters the contest on a three-match winning streak and playing some of its best soccer of the season. The Musketeers (7-3-2, 3-1 BIG EAST) own shutout wins in five of their last six outings and are 5-0-1 at home in 2016.

Admission to the event will be free and fans are asked to park in the Calhoun Garage, which is adjacent to Gettler Stadium and will be available for $5 per car.

• Villanova has allowed nine goals in just four conference matches (2.22 GAA).
• Goalkeeper Will Steiner ranks 22nd in the nation with 53 saves.
• Providence scored three goals against Villanova on Saturday, tying a season-high for a VU opponent.
• Xavier leads the all-time series 3-0, including a remarkable comeback win last season at Higgins Field. XU trailed 1-0 with under five minutes to play, but Todd Pratzner (95') and Majed Osman (97') found the net to stun the Wildcats at home.
• Villanova finished with its first winning record since 2012 last season, but just missed a bid to the BIG EAST Championships.
• The Wildcats have added a Top-20 recruiting class for this season, according to Top Drawer Soccer.

PLAYIN' IN A TRAVELING BAND

• Tonight's "home match" at UC's Gettler Stadium will be the Musketeers' sixth 2016 home tilt away from the comforts of Xavier Soccer Complex.
• Despite the challenge of playing away from XU Soccer Compex, XU is 4-0-1 in home matches away from home. The Musketeers drew with Dartmouth at UC on Sept. 5 and have run off four straight "home" wins since, including victories against Cincinnati (at NKU), DePaul (at UC), St. John's (at Walnut Hills HS) and Belmont (at NKU).
• During the stretch, the Musketeers have competed at UC's Gettler Stadium twice, NKU Soccer Stadium twice and at local Walnut Hills High School.
• The Xavier Soccer Complex is currently under repair and temporarily unplayable due to last month's severe flooding in and around the Norwood area.
• XU's only true home match this season was the 2016 opener, a 3-1 win against Evansville back on Friday, August 26.

NO HARM, NO FOUL

• Xavier has long been one of the fewest penalized teams in the nation, and 2016 has been no exception. The Musketeers have been charged with just nine yellow cards (no reds) this season. Only 13 teams have fewer yellows this season.

LAST TIME OUT

• XU picked up a 3-0 win against Belmont on Tuesday night at NKU Soccer Stadium, getting all three goals from defenders.
• Xavier has now recorded shutouts in three straight matches, including five of its last six outings.
• The Musketeers are now 5-0-1 at "home" this season, despite playing five of those six matches away from Xavier Soccer Complex due to ongoing field repairs.
• Colin Hanley and Jake Ciricillo split time in net, combining for a shutout. Hanley made the night's only save for XU, lowering his season GAA to 0.58.
• XU outshot the Bruins 19-1 overall and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
• Majed Osman had a team-high four shots, while 10 total Musketeers had attempts.
• Cam Taylor scored his first career-goal, putting in the game-winner in the 24th minute.
• Nine different Musketeers have now scored goals this season.
• Josh Grant had a season-best two assists and is now tied for the team lead with four helpers on the year.
• Xavier's 10 points and 19 shots were its second-most of the season. The team's nine shots on goal tied a season-high.
• Matt Nance had his first career three-point match, which tied a season-high for Xavier. He is the third XU player to have a three-point match this season.

SHARING IS CARING

• Sporting a typically-balanced offensive attack, Xavier has received goals from nine different players while eight Musketeers have contributed assists.

ON THE OFFENSIVE

• Xavier ranks 42nd in the nation in total points (60) and 56th in total goals (19).
• Xavier ranks 18th in both assists per game (1.83) and total assists (22).

SHOTS FIRED

• Xavier has been one of the top teams in the nation at generating scoring chances this fall.
• The Musketeers have outshot their opponents 164-134, including a 71-58 edge in shots on goal.
• The Musketeers are 56th in the nation with 13.67 shots per game and also rank 52nd in shots on goal per match with an average of 5.92.
• Individually, Majed Osman rates 20th in the NCAA with 3.67 shots per game and 68th with 1.42 shots on goal per game.

KEEPING CLEAN

• Sophomore Colin Hanley has been outstanding in goal over his past six outings, stabilizing the position and posting four shutouts to go with a 0.49 GAA in BIG EAST action.
• He ranks 18th in the nation with a 0.58 GAA and 39th in saves per match (4.57). His save percentage is second in the country (.889).
• Hanley made his season debut on Sept. 13 in a 2-0 loss at nationally-ranked Louisville, but since then has allowed just two goals in over 526 minutes.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO?

• Xavier goalkeepers have set program records for goals against average in three straight seasons.
• In 2013, Eric Osswald began the trend with a mark of 0.82. He lowered his own record to 0.74 in 2014, posting a program-best 11 shutouts and earning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Last season, Dallas Jaye continued the run with an impressive 0.63 GAA and a BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year award.
• With five shutouts in his last six outings, sophomore Colin Hanley could give Jaye's mark a run. His GAA sits at 0.58 overall and is a sterling 0.49 in BIG EAST action.

BIG (EAST) SUCCESS

• After a 3-1 start to league play, Xavier is now 20-8-3 (.694) in BIG EAST play since joining the conference ahead of the 2013 season.
• The Musketeers have never finished below fourth in the BIG EAST standings.
• In three years in the league, Xavier has never failed to advance to the BIG EAST Tournament – reaching the semifinals in 2013 and 2015, while also appearing in the 2014 title match against Providence.

GETTING UP OFF THE MAT

• After a 2-1 road loss at Providence on Saturday, Xavier men's soccer responded with a 1-0 win vs. Cleveland State on Tuesday. It continues a trend of solid play after losses under Andy Fleming.
• Since 2010, XU has compiled a record of 19-8-4 (.677) after a loss.

STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE

• Xavier has played the 52nd most difficult schedule in the nation thus far with a combined opponent record of 59-48-26 (.541).
• The Musketeers were also rated 17th in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, released on Monday, Oct. 10.
• Five BIG EAST teams are in the top-52 in terms of schedule strength, ranging from Georgetown (4), Creighton (19), Butler (20), Villanova (21), Seton Hall (31) and Xavier (52).
• Eight league teams are in the top-100 as Providence ranks 67th and St. John's ranks 92nd.

XU PICKED FOURTH IN BIG EAST

• The Musketeers were picked to finish fourth in the league's annual coaches poll, coming in behind two preseason top-10 teams in Creighton and Georgetown. XU also received a first-place vote in the poll for the first time.
• Matt Vasquenza and Cory Brown were both selected to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, as Brown was named the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
• The prediction ties the highest for XU since entering the league in 2013. XU was picked fourth last season, seventh in 2014 and fifth in 2013.
• XU lived up to its prediction last season, finishing fourth in the league at 5-3-1. The Musketeers have been inside the top-four in each of its first three seasons in the BIG EAST.

WHAT'S BACK

• Xavier returns 16 players, including eight starters, from last season's 12-win team.
• The roster consists of 10 freshmen, seven sophomores, six juniors and four seniors.
• Four of Xavier's top five offensive options are back, as returners Jalen Brown, Matt Vasquenza, Majed Osman and Walker Andriot took a combined 122 shots in 2015. Those four players accounted for 53 percent of Xavier's 229 total shots in 2015.
• XU's typically-balanced offense saw 12 players record an assist or score a goal last season. Eight of the goal-scorers return in 2016, while nine players return who contributed an assist.
• The senior class of Jalen Brown, Todd Pratzner, Jake Ciricillo, Walker Andriot and Majed Osman have helped XU to a 38-20-5 (.643) record since 2013.
• The Musketeers return 52 percent of their goal-scoring (15-of-29) and 56 percent of their points (44-of-78).

HOLES TO FILL

• XU is holding auditions to replace a BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight season after losing Dallas Jaye (13 GS, 0.63 GAA) to graduation. Jaye succeeded 2014 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Eric Osswald.
• Leading scorer Alex Ridsdale (8g, 1a) was also lost to graduation.
• A key piece in the midfield, Kyle Martin graduated after starting 47 matches since 2013.
• Right back Chris Moore also graduated after making 58 career starts since 2013.
• The 2015 senior class of Dallas Jaye, Vince Shaw, Alex Ridsdale, Calum Latham, Kyle Martin, Rhodes Moore and Chris Moore left Xavier with 51 wins – tied for the most by any graduating group.
• In addition to player turnover, XU has an entirely new look on the sidelines with Ernie Yarborough, Garrett McLaughlin, Chris Black and Cam Olson all beginning their first year with the program. Former assistants John Michael Hayden (Louisville) and Charles Rodriguez (Stanford) took new jobs in the collegiate ranks, while goalkeeper coach Jamie Starr (FC Cincinnati) and Director of Operations Luke Spencer (FC Cincinnati) joined the USL.

CORY BROWN COLLECTING HONORS

• For a second straight preseason, Cory Brown has racked up an impressive collection of preseason honors. The junior from Nelson, New Zealand is considered one of the best defenders in college soccer and was on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as a sophomore.

• Xavier posted a 1-1 record in a pair of exhibitions, defeating the 2015 NAIA National Champs, Rio Grande (OH), 2-0 at home and falling 3-1 at No. 4 Maryland.
• Jalen Brown (2g) scored unassisted in both matches for the Musketeers and could be primed for a big season after leading XU in shots in 2015.

AMONG THE NATION'S ELITE

· Xavier men's soccer has reached the NCAA Tournament in four of the last six seasons.
· The Musketeers finished 2015 at 12-6-1 overall, marking a sixth straight season with at least 10 wins – one of just 12 programs that can claim the feat.
· Last fall also marked Xavier's third straight finish in the top-four of the BIG EAST.
· XU was ranked in the nation's top-10 by the NSCAA for the third time in four years, while knocking of the national No. 1 (Creighton) and No. 2 (Notre Dame) on the road last season. The Musketeers are widely believed to be the first program to ever knock off both a No. 1 and a No. 2 on the road in the same season.
