Burrell's Season-High Paces XU in 76-66 Win Over Kansas State

CINCINNATI - Junior guard Stanley Burrell scored a season-high 23 points and was a spotless 10-of-10 from the free throw line to lead the Xavier University men's basketball team past Kansas State by, 76-66, on Wednesday evening at U.S. Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati.
With the win, XU's sixth in-a-row at U.S. Bank Arena, the Musketeers improve to 10-4 on the season while the Wildcats slip to 10-4.
Burrell was 6-of-10 from the floor and also chased down four rebounds on the night.
Joining Burrell in double-figures were Justin Doellman and Drew Lavender. Doellman scored 15 on 5-of-7 shooting. He also snatched a team-high six boards. Lavender chipped in with 12 points to notch his second consecutive double-digit scoring night. The Columbus native was 5-of-10 from the field and also dished-out a team-high three assists.
XU built a 39-30 halftime lead but took command of the game with solid defense in the early stages of the second half. XU held KSU without a field goal for a 4:10 stretch and charged out to a 13-3 run to seize a 52-35 advantage with 14:30 left in regulation.
The Musketeers were not threatened from there on, cruising to the 76-66 victory.
While Kansas State went cold Xavier heated up, connecting on 60 percent (12-of-20) of its field goal attempts in the second half. K-State shot just 40.3 percent (25-of-62) on the night, including a chilly 37.5 percent (12-of-32) in the second half.
David Hoskins led the way for KSU with 17 points.
Both sides turned it over 19 times but Xavier took advantage, out-scoring the Wildcats 27-18 in points off turnovers.
The early minutes of the first half saw four ties and seven lead changes and KSU took its largest lead of the game, 22-18, with 8:40 remaining in the first session.
XU mounted its run from there though, scoring the next 14 points over a five-minute span and seizing a 35-24 lead on the strength of a 17-2 run. The decisive spurt culminated with a B.J. Raymond 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark and featured six points from Burrell.
K-State whittled the deficit down to nine points, 39-30, at the break.
XU will be back in action on Saturday, January 6 when the team begins Atlantic 10 Conference play against Temple. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center and the showdown will be televised regionally by FSN Ohio.
