CINCINNATI – The No. 7 Xavier University women’s basketball team will welcome Richmond to Cintas Center on Sunday, February 7. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and the contest will be nationally televised on ESPNU. The first 1,000 fans through the door will receive a free D’Artagnan Wobble Body.
McGuff Eclipses All-Time Wins Mark Head coach Kevin McGuff became XU’s all-time winningest coach when his team defeated Kentucky by a 67-44 count on December 2, 2008. McGuff’s record at Xavier now stands at 172-69 and his .714 winning percentage is the highest in XU history. Melanie Balcomb, the current head coach at Vanderbilt and previous record holder at XU, eclipsed Mark Ehlen’s all-time mark in her first try as did McGuff. It took Balcomb 212 games to reach 135 wins ... McGuff won his 135th game in his 196th game. McGuff is the first coach to lead XU to the postseason in each of their first seven seasons.
McGuff Moves Up A-10 Charts
Head coach Kevin McGuff is bolting up a couple of lists after leading XU to a 13-1 conference record last season. McGuff is in eighth place on the all-time Atlantic 10 winning percentage list (regular season games only). McGuff has a record of 85-28 in A-10 regular season games since the 2002-03 season for a winning percentage of .752, which is the best among active coaches. McGuff now sits in ninth place, in just his seventh season, on the A-10 wins list (regular season games only) with 85.
Xavier Ranked No. 7/7
Xavier comes into today’s game ranked No. 7 by the Associated Press and No. 7 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Musketeers have now been ranked for 43 weeks in their history. Xavier is 59-12 all-time as a ranked team and the No. 7 ranking marks the highest XU has ever achieved in each poll.
Streaking in League Play
The Musketeers have won 21 of their last 22 regular season Atlantic 10 games. The streak dates back to a 60-57 win over St. Bonaventure on March 1, 2008. Since then XU’s only loss has been the 74-65 setback at Temple on February 25, 2009.
XU Stays Hot During February
Over the last four years, Xavier is 27-5 during the month of February. The best Februarys under Kevin McGuff came during the 2008-09 and 2006-07 seasons when XU played to a 7-1 record. Xavier’s best February all time came when the team went 8-0 during the 2000-01 season.
Ta’Shia Reaches 900
Junior star Ta’Shia Phillips has accumulated 953 rebounds and she hauled in her 500th against Davidson on December 19, 2008. Phillips reached 500 career rebounds in 45 games, which is faster than any Musketeer in team history. Amber Harris was the previous record holder, reaching 500 boards in 56 games. Additionally, Phillips established a new single season rebounding record, hauling in 386 boards during the 2008-09 season. The previous single-season mark was 371, set by none other than Phillips
during the 2007-08 campaign.
Rutan Poised to Break Record
Freshman guard Katie Rutan has connected on 59 3-point field goals through 20 games and is on pace to drain 81 long balls during the regular season. The freshman record for most 3FG in a season is 60. That mark was set by current Xavier assistant coach Amy Waugh during the 1999-00 season.
