INDIANAPOLIS - Eight Xavier University teams earned public recognition from the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their sport for the multiyear rate, ending with the 2016-17 academic year.
"Xavier has always placed an emphasis on excellence in the classroom as well as on the field of play," said Greg Christopher, Xavier University Director of Athletics. "The latest APR shows the dedication of our student-athletes to being exceptional, on and off the court, and is a credit to their efforts, as well as those of our coaches and academic staff."
Xavier's baseball, men's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's golf, women's tennis and women's swimming programs all earned the recognition, which includes data from the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-2016 and 2016-17 academic years.
This marks the 13th consecutive year that women's tennis has earned a perfect score, making it one of 85 teams nationwide that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year the measure has existed.
Since the NCAA started the Public Recognition Awards program in 2004-05, Xavier has had 82 teams earn the annual award.
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,284, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year.
APR PUBLIC RECOGNITION
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
