Men's Tennis Takes on St. John's in Opening Round of BIG EAST Championships

CINCINNATI – Xavier men's tennis opens up post season play on Friday, April 19 as the Musketeers take on No. 1 seed St. John's in the first round of the 2019 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Chamionships. The matchup with the Red Storm is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. in Cayce, South Carolina.

MATCH NOTES: ST. JOHN'S |
- St. John's was selected as the tournament's No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with a 16-5 overall record.
- The Red Storm were a perfect 4-0 in regular season conference play this season.
- In 2018, the No. 2 Red Storm knocked off No. 7 Xavier, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round.
- St. John's anf Xavier did not play eachother in the 2019 regular season.
- St. John's is coached by Dillon Pottish.

- In doubles play, Marquette took the first set following a 6-2 victory in the No. 1 spot, defeating Brett Winters and Jack Dykema. The Golden Eagles then secured the doubles point after defeating Michael Lee and Jan Vrba in the No. 2 spot, 6-3. Matthew Graft and Connor LaFavre led Marquette, 5-4, in the No. 2 spot when the doubles point was decided.
- The Musketeers struggled in singles competition and were unable to secure a point in the match. Brett Winters fell in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-4. Teammate Matthew Graft then fell in the No. 3 spot to Marquette's Luis Heredia Gomez, 7-6 (10-4), 6-3.
- In the No. 6 spot, the Golden Eagles defeated Trent Smith, 6-1, 6-0, to secure their fourth and final point. Marquette won the match 4-0.
- In the No. 2 spot, Jack Dykema trailed 3-6, 5-5 when the final point was decided, while teammate Michael Lee led Brett Meyers of Marquette, 7-6 (3-0), 3-4. Connor LaFavre's No. 5 spot matchup was also unfinished, ending with a 3-6, 6-1, 3-4 count when the final point was decided.

- Xavier's roster is deep with upper-classmen, with three seniors and two juniors. Returning seniors include Jack Dykema, Connor LaFavre, and Trent Smith. Juniors Matthew Graft and Michael Lee also return.
- Xavier is 6-14 so far this season.
- Xavier will compete as a No. 8 seed in the 2019 BIG EAST Championships.
