This partnership creates new opportunities for Xavier’s student-athletes.
CINCINNATI – Xavier University and The Brandr Group (TBG) have established a group licensing agreement for the university's student-athletes covering all the Musketeers' 19 varsity sports. This partnership creates new opportunities for Xavier's student-athletes to profit off their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) using the school's official trademarks and logos.
"I am excited to announce our new agreement with The Brandr Group," said Greg Christopher, Xavier University Vice President and Director of Athletics. "This provides a great opportunity for Xavier Nation to purchase items like jerseys, t-shirts and other gear branded with the official Xavier marks and support their favorite Musketeer student-athletes. The arrangement with TBG affords us another way to assist our student-athletes in their efforts to monetize their Name, Image and Likeness."
Xavier has enjoyed an impressive history in athletics and academic success, including a men's basketball program that has made 16 of the last 20 NCAA Tournaments and graduated 112 straight seniors that have finished their eligibility. Since joining the BIG EAST Conference in 2013, Xavier has won at least one BIG EAST Championship in baseball, men's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, women's tennis and men's swimming.
At the same time Xavier celebrates these many team successes, the Musketeers' student-athlete success in the classroom has been equally or more impressive. Xavier student-athletes posted a department-record grade-point average of 3.46 for the academic year and placed 240 student-athletes on the 2020-21 BIG EAST All-Academic Team. All Xavier programs were represented.
The partnership with The Brandr Group allows for the collective use of student-athletes' NIL in licensing and marketing programs, co-branded with the Xavier logos and marks. Student-athletes will have the option to voluntarily join a group licensing program. TBG will facilitate group licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes, and the program does not limit individual NIL rights.
"For years, Xavier University has penned a story of success across its athletics program, and we're looking forward to partnering with them to write a new chapter for their student-athletes," said Wesley Haynes, TBG CEO. "Through this group licensing agreement, Musketeer players will be able to benefit from various co-branded opportunities that span Xavier's merchandising portfolio. In this new era of collegiate athletics, group licensing offers the opportunity for these student-athletes to benefit financially from their NIL, while also offering merchandise and sponsorship opportunities that promise to enhance the fan experience."
TBG, a brand management, marketing and licensing agency, will manage and administer the program as well as develop licensing opportunities on behalf of the student-athletes. With extensive collective management experience for some of the world's largest brands, TBG also manages the group rights program for the NFL, NBA and MLB players' associations in the college space.
For decades, professional athletes have benefited from products that combine team logos and player names and numbers, with those sales accounting for a large portion of licensed sports merchandise sales. The Xavier group licensing program opens the door for the same opportunities for Musketeer players. Fans can expect to be able to purchase official Xavier merchandise, including team jerseys, with the name and number of their favorite Musketeer players provided they have joined the respective group licensing program once TBG enters into agreements with applicable school trademark licensees.
