Fred Nebel, a member of the Legion of Honor, was one of the premier student-athletes in the history of Musketeer sports. Recognizing the outstanding quality of one who excels in academic pursuits as well as football, the Athletic Council named Nebel to the Legion of Honor following his senior season. As a senior, he was also named Xavier's model student-athlete.
The husky Chicagoan, who prepped at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, was one of the finest centers in the Midwest during his stint for the Musketeers.
In his junior year he was named to the All-Ohio and Little All-America squads. Opposing coaches and players alike praised his alert, all-around play. By his senior year, Musketeer fans were calling him the greatest center ever to play at Xavier, as he again was named All-Ohio and Little All-America.
For four years Nebel ranked among the top ten in his class, and made the Honor Roll his senior year with an "A" average. Nebel was also very active in student council at Xavier, and was a member of several other student organizations.
