Huck Budde, who lettered three years in basketball. Member of the Xavier 1,000-Point Club, was a battling forward in the early 1950's who helped Xavier to a 16-10 record his sophomore season, and that was against one of the toughest Musketeer schedules ever. Budde helped the team to a 60-52 victory over Notre Dame and a 92-85 victory over North Carolina. The final slate might have been better, but the Musketeers played Kentucky twice a year in the early 50's.
Budde finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in Xavier history with 1,096 points. He now stands tied for 44th on the career scoring list with Derrick Brown.
Budde led Xavier in scoring his senior year, when he pumped in 501 points for a 21.8 ppg. average. The 501 points were a Xavier record until Bob Quick pumped in 519 points in the 1965-66 season. XU All-Time Scoring Leader Byron Larkin now holds the record with 792 points in the 1986-87 season.
The St. Xavier High School product was all-everything as a prepster. At Xavier University, he started at center, then moved into the corner as a forward the next season when fellow XU Hall of Famer Gene Smith came along.
Despite his 6-4 size, Budde was a force at forward for the Musketeers. He more than made up for his lack of size with his great shooting touch and strong, aggressive play under the boards.
"I remember him as a strong, husky player who was primarily a scorer," his former teammate, Don Ruberg said. "He was a good ball player, who I remember could score with the best of them."
