Jeff Fogelson was hired in 1983 as XU's first-ever Associate Athletic Director to take some of the workload off of then head basketball coach and athletic director Bob Staak, however he spent only a few months with that title. Xavier's President Charles Currie, S.J., promoted Fogelson in January of 1984 to take over as Xavier's Athletic Director.
Fogelson's successful 15-year tenure as AD ran from 1984 until his departure to Seton Hall University in 1998. Fogelson has since retired as athletic director at Seton Hall University and returned to work and teach at the University of Cincinnati.
Fogelson led the move of Xavier men's basketball to Cincinnati Gardens in his first year at Xavier, 1983-84. XU hosted and beat Nebraska and Ohio State that year to culminate a successful first year in what would be a very successful 17-year run at the Gardens. He made many other big decisions during his tenure, including the hiring of Pete Gillen in 1986 and his successor, the late Skip Prosser, in 1994.
There were 10 men's basketball postseason appearances during Fogelson's 15 years as Athletic Director. There was plenty of success and plenty of change. One of the more dramatic changes was the 1994 announcement that Xavier was joining the Atlantic 10 Conference after 16 years in the MCC. XU began competition in the A-10 in the 1995-96 school year.
