Judy Smith brought versatility to the Musketeer basketball program. She could score, rebound, pass and play defense. She was an all-around solid player for head coach Laurie Massa, another XU Hall of Famer. Smith was a Team MVP (1981-82) and Team Captain (1983-84).Â
Let the stats speak for themselves. Smith recorded 232 steals in her career and is eighth for most assists in a career with 351 from 1980-84. She is 14th on the all-time scoring chart with 1,376 career points and seventh on the all-time rebounding chart with 760 rebounds.
During her four-year career Smith led the team in assists three years, in steals four years, and in rebounds two years. The two seasons she did not lead the team in rebounds she finished second to the number five all-time rebounder, Karen Ohe.
As a freshman in 1980-81, Smith played in 27 games, starting 18 games, in helping XU finish 15-13. She averaged 10.3 points (second) and 5.0 rebounds (second) while leading the team in assists (52) and steals (36).
As a sophomore, Smith started all 34 games while helping XU post its then best-ever season at 20-14. Smith earned Team MVP honors and All-AIAW Tournament honors after leading XU to the AIAW State Championship. She averaged 12.8 points (second) and 5.8 rebounds (second) while again leading the team in assists (100) and steals (72). She earned Team MVP honors on a team which also counted an All-American scorer, Jo Ann Osterkamp, on its roster.
As a junior, Smith started all 26 games as XU finished 13-13 in its first season of Division I competition. She averaged 12.7 points (second) while leading the teams in rebounds (8.0 per game), assists (97), and steals (58).
As a senior, Smith started all 26 games in a 10-16 season. XU finished 3-7 in the North Star Conference, its first-ever conference affiliation. Smith earned NSC Player of the Week honors one time. She averaged 12.9 points (third) while leading the team in rebounds (8.5 per game) and steals (66) and finishing second in assists (102).
Smith left her mark at Xavier. She was a fine all-around player and a team leader on and off the court. She was an excellent student. She epitomizes the model student-athlete.
