Mark Schmidt, who l ettered three years in football, was a member of the Legion of Honor and later served on the Athletic Board (1947-48).
Sportswriters in the day of the late Mark Schmidt said that in the roll call of the Musketeer "Legion of Honor" there will not be found a man more deserving of this high honor than Mark Schmidt.
Schmidt played three years of varsity football at Xavier, one year as an end, and his last two seasons as a guard.
Schmidt's play at the guard position was one of the highest caliber, as his grit and determination formed an unpassable barrier for opposing teams. His work on the offensive line was a huge factor in paving the way for the fleet Musketeer halfbacks. During his last two seasons, Schmidt and his fellow linemen, Rapp and Schiebert, formed the most powerful offensive line in Ohio.
XU improved from 2-5-1 (1924) to 5-2-1 (1925) to 9-1 (1926) during Schmidt's stay at Xavier. He helped XU average 34.8 points per game in his senior season, 1926, as the Musketeers defeated the likes of Toledo (69-6), Marshall (20-6), and Louisville (20-7).
